Summary : The position of Deputy Sheriff involves overall responsibilities of preventing, detecting and investigating crimes, apprehending criminals and other violators. Responding to emergencies and all other calls for Law Enforcement services. Keeping the peace, protecting persons and property and assisting the public. Deputy Sheriffs also assume primary responsibility for traffic enforcement, accident investigation, and assisting the judicial system in pursuing justice. Documenting events and occurrences. A Deputy Sheriff may be assigned primary responsibilities in one or more of the following areas : School Resources Officer, Recreational Patrol Deputy, Canine, Field Training / Instructing, Civil Process Server, Court Services Deputy, Investigation Unit, ERT / SWAT
Duties / Responsibilities
Essential Duties : These duties represent the typical duties and responsibilities assigned to this position but may not be inclusive of all tasks performed. Communicate at all times in a professional and courteous manner.
- The Deputy shall have knowledge of and be able to apply accepted Law Enforcement practices to encounters involving county ordinances, state and federal laws.
- Ability to deal with individuals under high stress and physically hazardous conditions when responding to calls, crimes, accidents, investigations, etc.
- Position and concern himself / herself always to prevent crime and protect property and persons.
- Respond to emergencies in a safe and expeditious manner.
- Report to "on-duty" status at any time when directed to do so by a supervisor.
- Control, govern and regulate the circumstances surrounding the scene of a crime, emergency or other event or occurrence.
- Monitor the activities of the department staff as well as other emergency service providers and take appropriate action toward aiding any officer, or emergency service provider exposed to danger or any situation where danger might be probable.
- Respond to all calls for service, act upon information or otherwise address concerns of the public without undue delay.
- Receive, initiate, evaluate, prioritize and disseminate information in an efficient and effective manner.
- Document occurrences and incidents in a timely, accurate and thorough manner.
- Conduct criminal investigations within the scope of their duties as thoroughly as possible.
- Properly gather and preserve evidence. Transfer evidence according to department policy.
- Competently testify in court.
- Render first aid to persons in need.
- Conduct rescue or recovery operations in any possible conditions.
- Conduct programs, presentations or otherwise concern himself / herself with educating the public on safety issues.
- Properly perform routine tasks such as arresting suspects, filing of reports and documents, radio and phone communications, vehicle care, office procedures, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Transportation of inmates.
- Communicate effectively with other law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, defense attorneys, court personnel, county, state, and federal agencies, other county departments, emergency service providers, inmates and the general public.
- Must maintain LESB law enforcement certification.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities :
The Deputy that is assigned primary duties in the area of School Resource Officer will perform the following duties in addition to the essential duties and responsibilities previously stated :
The Deputy assigned primary responsibilities in the area of Civil Process will perform the following duties in a professional and courteous manner :
Enforce state laws and local ordinances relative to recreational activities.

Certificates / Licenses / Registrations :
1.Current Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Certification or licensed or certified as a law enforcement officer in another state and be eligible for Wisconsin Certification.
2. Must possess a valid driver's license from state of Wisconsin.
3.Must maintain LESB law enforcement certification.
