Material Sorter
SALARY: Hourly $20.12 - 21.77 per hour, Non-Exempt Position
HOURS OF WORK:
Summer - Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and overtime as necessary
Winter - Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and overtime as necessary

NATURE OF WORK:
- Under the general direction of the Landfill and Compost Facility Manager; this position operates the metal processing facility and hand sorts metal materials. Also responsible for cleanup of the processing plant and office/breakroom.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Previous experience in industrial, construction, or agriculture industries
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Sort metal material from the conveyor line including mix of ferrous, nonferrous, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass material.
- Cleaning of equipment, including conveyor belts and all other recycling line equipment.
- Responsible for housekeeping of processing plant, office, breakroom, and locker room facilities
- Operating forklifts and skid loaders for processing and loading and unloading of materials.
- Assists other employees in operating and servicing of the landfill and compost facility equipment and buildings
- Assist in the inventory control of spare parts.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- General safety knowledge and skills including LOTO experience.
- Ability to identify materials in the metal stream so that they can be properly sorted
- Ability to read and record data
- Ability to operate scales and scale systems
- Ability to use basic hand tools
- Ability to work with other employees engaged in operating and repairing equipment
- Ability to communicate effectively
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds occasionally
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
- Must be able to climb ladders and steps
- Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull and perform repetitive motion
- Must be able to withstand extreme temperatures
- Must be able to wear a respirator
- Must be able to work in confined space areas.

Retirement Program–As an employee of Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management (PDSWM), you are required to enroll in P.E.R.A. (Public Employee’s Retirement Association). Participation is mandated for all public employees who meet the requirements of the plan. Employee Deduction is 6.5% and Employer Contribution is 7.5%.
Health Insurance– PDSWM carries group medical insurance with the Public Employee Insurance Program (P.E.I.P.). Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following employment. Employees can choose between a high plan or HSA compatible plan; along with single, single 1, or family coverage.
Life Insurance- As a full time Pope/Douglas employee, you will be covered by $20,000 of life insurance at no expense. Supplemental insurance is available to the employee at his/her own expense. The supplemental portion is not automatic. Eligibility is determined by the underwriter.

VACATIONS
Employees will accrue vacation according to the following schedule:
0 - 5 years - 80 hours a year
6 - 10 years - 120 hours a year
11 - 20 years - 160 hours a year
21 years - 200 hours a year
Vacation time may not be taken until after the probationary period.
SICK LEAVE
An employee shall be credited with 8 hours of sick leave for each month of service accumulative to 720 hours.
