Who We Are Looking For:

Populous is seeking a full-time experienced Payroll Specialist to join our Kansas City HR team. Our preferred candidate will have a strong background in payroll processing and the ability to multi-task in a deadline-driven environment. The best candidate will be self-motivated, detail oriented and eager to learn within a fun, collaborative atmosphere.

What Your Day Could Consist Of:

  • Compile payroll data, such as timesheets, vacation time, 401(k) and benefits deductions, garnishments, bonus, GTL offset, year-end adjustments, etc.
  • Run and audit bi-weekly payroll
  • Run benefits-related reporting and other reports related to compensation and payroll.
  • Work with employees and coordinating paid leave (STD and FMLA) with our accounting department.
  • Enter in pay rate changes, tax withholding information and changes, 401k contribution changes and other employee information as needed.
  • Maintain detailed payroll records.
  • Work with our in-house legal department on payroll-related state tax set up and other necessary items when needed.
  • Review electronic timesheets and the downloaded information for completeness and accuracy.
  • Process accurate and timely biweekly transfer of US and Canadian payroll data using ADP Workforce Now including off-cycle submittals when necessary.
  • Review and process biweekly transfer of funds to 401(k) provider and other benefits providers as necessary.
  • Assist HR Director and HR Manager with various HR duties and projects to include:
    • Assisting with benefits administration and maintenance of database information in HRIS and benefits vendor websites, for new hires and current employees.
    • Audit and reconcile invoices from benefits providers and prepare accounts payable paperwork.
    • Assist with annual 401K audits or other special projects.
    • Other HR projects as assigned
Requirements For Success:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of payroll processing, using web-based software is essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multi-state payroll regulations, compliance and best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other HR software applications.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organize procedures in a logical/methodical manner.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with integrity and discretion.


Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of an associate degree (AA) or the equivalent in years of related experience and/or training. Bachelors degree is preferred.
  • Applicants with payroll experience within an architectural, engineering or other professional services environment will be preferred.
  • Conducting regular audits of employee records to ensure accurate pay and tax information.
  • Experience with multi-state and international payroll processing required.
  • 5-10 years of overall payroll experience is required; those candidates with ADP Workforce Now software experience highly preferred.
  • 1-3 years of human resources experience preferred.
  • Experience with ADP and/or Deltek is preferred.


Additional details:

  • Travel will be required.
  • Overtime may be necessary.
