Position Summary:
The Homer High School Fellowship program offers high school students an opportunity to learn about the museum industry in an authentic museum experience. Under the supervision of the Gallery Engagement Manager and with guidance from the Teen Engagement Specialist, the fellow will collaborate on programming and content development aimed at engaging teens with the PMA and its collection. This fellowship program is designed to foster creative thinking, build community, with access to the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) collection for inspiration and idea building and with direct mentorship from PMA staff.
Terms:
This is an at-will, part-time position.
Timeframe: June 23, 2025-August 14, 2025 (tentative).
Days and Hours: 10a – 3p, Tuesday – Thursday (tentative). Some evening hours may be required.
Job Functions:
- Experiential Learning and Engagement
- Attends the PMA’s public programs, such as artist and curator talks, tours, and other events.
- Explores the PMA’s collections and exhibitions and learns how the museum ensures public accessibility.
- Visits working artists’ studios and the Winslow Homer Studio at Prout’s Neck to learn about place-based art practices, and to link the process of observing with the process of creating.
- Collaborates on special projects with the Education department and receives mentorship from PMA staff.
- Teen Inclusion and Programming
- Provides feedback to support the PMA in creating inclusive and welcoming experiences for teen audiences.
- Assists in creating interpretative materials and programs designed to engage teen audiences with the PMA and its collections.
Qualifications:
- Applicants must be high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
- Must by at least 14 years of age by the start of the program.
- Must be able to obtain a work permit if under 16 years of age.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Work Environment: In-person at PMA or affiliated sites, involving office and onsite engagement.
Physical Demands: Frequent computer use.
Exposures: Varying museum and offsite environments; fluctuating noise levels; large meetings and events.
