    Breathe Support Services Educational Technician III (Full Time 1.0 FTE) - EEC


    SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: With the supervision of the Assistant Director of Specialized Programs, and building Principals, the Education Technician assists the Special Education Teacher by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning, positive behavioral interventions and safety. Responsibilities involve working with students with behavioral disabilities, individually and in small groups to assess performance, reinforcing instruction, motivating learning, assisting with classroom management, data tracking,

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

    • Provides specially designed instruction (defined as instructional activities designed to address deficits related to a student’s disability) to students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
    • Implements lesson plans and follows schedules created by the special education teacher or appropriate related service provider.
    • Introduces new learning that is pre planned in consultation with the special education teacher or appropriate related service provider.
    • Performs short-term instruction in small classes or in community-based programs.
    • Implements Positive Support Plans (PSPs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Individual Treatment Plans (ITPs). Maintains related, planned data collection
    • Helps maintain order and discipline and assists in managing the behavior of students, including crisis intervention.
    • Participates in crisis intervention training and utilizes de-escalation techniques and therapeutic interventions, as appropriate.
    • Consults with special education teachers on a regular basis (at least on a twice monthly basis) regarding educational needs, accommodations, and modifications.
    • Collaborates with related service providers, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and social workers.
    • Monitors students engaged in independent work or similar activities while the teacher is otherwise occupied.
    • Provides information to assist the teacher in the evaluation of the learning process, behavior management programs, and individual student needs and progress, and recommends appropriate action.
    • Continues planned instructional activities during teacher's temporary absence from the classroom.
    • Assists in the supervision of students while being transported on buses and during the loading and unloading of buses.
    • Performs clerical and non-instructional duties such as recording and tracking data, distributing books and supplies, maintaining files and records, creating reports and routine correspondence, and photocopying instructional materials; however, such duties comprise a clear minority of the work hours.
    • Attends meetings, professional development, and in-service training, as required.
    • Completes service delivery and data documentation for Mainecare services (Sections 65 and 28).
    • Serves on committees assigned by the administrator.
    • Maintains FERPA and respects the confidentiality of all student and staff information.
    • Maintains ethical behavior.
    • Performs other duties, as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to calculate accurately.
    • Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and others in an open, friendly, business-like manner.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Approval as an Educational Technician III by the Maine Department of Education. In the alternative, Maine provisional or professional teacher certification.
    • Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree that includes nine credit hours related to an education field such as behavior management or classroom strategies, and to candidates who have at least one year of experience working with students in structured situations.
    • Certified in CPI or able to be certified.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with implementing PSPs and ITPs.
    • Ability to physically assist students (lift up to 35 pounds) to support students to perform adaptive living and self-care skills, if assigned to work with non-ambulatory students.
    • Frequent bending, walking, running, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 35 pounds may be required.
    • Whenever a staff member is responsible for more than 35 pounds of a student’s weight, additional staff will be required to lift the student safely (2-person requirement).
    • Mechanical lifts will be considered and provided on an individual as-needed basis.
    • Additional demands may require moving wheelchairs, assisting with toileting, feeding, and other daily living activities.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Outside duty may be required.
