What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teacher Leader, High School Instructional Coaches position at Portland Public Schools, Maine?
- Support teachers to deliver high quality instruction with adopted curricular materials, using data and effectively collaborating with others.
- Lead teacher teams in small Professional Learning Communities and across schools that elevate planning and instruction to be collaborative, rigorous, innovative, and high quality.
- Provide one-on-one coaching for teachers, with a focus on ensuring access to grade-level content for multilingual and special education students in the general education classroom.
- Facilitate data-based reflection meetings.
- Co-plan and co-teach with teachers.
- Collaborate with others to develop and/or facilitate high quality professional development for teachers.
- Support school leaders in meeting school success plan goals as determined by the school Leadership Team and the coach’s skill set.
- Help lead the high schools and the district towards our Portland Promise, our shared priorities particularly around Equity and Achievement, and each school’s school success plans.
- Meet with principals regularly to review school success plans and support schools towards their goals.
- Attend PD to better understand our curricular goals and turnkey PD for teachers.
- Collaborate with the Language Development Department to ensure our practices align with the Lau Plan, and we are supporting all multilingual learners.
- Regularly look at school and district data to support effective instructional decision-making.
- Attend the Cross-HS Instructional Leadership PLG in order to share best practices and give feedback on policy across the district.
- EQUITY: Strong equity orientation and an openness to personal reflection on deepening awareness of personal bias and being culturally responsive. Demonstrated conviction around having high expectations for all students. Conviction that all students can achieve at high levels, and a deep-seated belief that all teachers have the capacity to get them there. Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy.
- CONTENT KNOWLEDGE: Extensive experience developing and/or supporting curriculum development in high school. Expertise in formative, benchmark/interim and summative assessment. Deep understanding of the 9-12 Common Core Standards and NGSS. Expertise in proficiency-based (or competency-based) education. Strong understanding of what quality curriculum, instruction and assessment looks like. Expertise in differentiating grade-level content for students at a variety of language levels and who might need specially designed instruction.
- COACH: Supports and engages teachers to realize the district’s instructional vision of teaching, learning and quality curriculum in every classroom. Fosters a culture of continuous learning by creating a culture of feedback and learning, modeling a growth mindset, and creating consistent structures to support the work. Uses high-leverage coaching strategies to elevate teacher and student learning such as learning labs, student-centered coaching, co-planning and co-teaching, and professional development. Adjusts course and measures impact based on student and teacher success and engagement data, such as achievement data, student work, and teacher observation.
- RELATIONSHIP BUILDER: Great relationship builder. Demonstrated ability to build trust with teachers and administrators. A great teammate. Someone who lifts people up rather than bringing them down. Someone who has a “go-getter” attitude about work. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
- Successful track record as a teacher. High school teacher experience required.
- Experience supporting adult learners preferred.
- Experience designing curriculum and assessment.
- Experience and/or endorsement supporting multilingual learners preferred.
- Currently holds or is eligible for a valid teacher certification.
