Position Details


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled journey-level electronics technician work in the installation and repair of communication, security, and fire detection systems and related equipment. This role also involves diagnosing and servicing various low-voltage electrical components, including those supporting mechanical systems, such as motor controls and electromechanical relays. Assists or coordinates with other skilled trades; and performs other duties as assigned. Executes all work assignments within the constraints of authorized expenditures and applicable District standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understands the principles of the electronics technician trade at a level sufficient to identify problems and perform tasks safely and completely; operate a personal computer, electronic systems and related software and use required hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Installs, programs, repairs, maintains, assembles, tests, and diagnoses a wide variety of electronic, low voltage electrical, and mechanical equipment and systems including fire detection and security, intercom and public address
  • Installs, services, and troubleshoots electronic control circuits for mechanical systems, including motorized components such as actuators and electronic motor controllers.
  • May install CAT 5, & 6 communication cabling, television, retrieval, computer and security systems.
  • Creates layouts and working sketches of various electronic and associated computer data projects; maintains records of system databases.
  • Inspects and tests equipment to determine source or feasibility of repair or modification; orders and installs replacement parts or components or forwards to authorized service agency for repair for electronic communication, fire or security systems, uses software programs to diagnose, repair, or modify operations of systems; operates a variety of electronic test equipment including multi-meters, signal generators, etc., hand and power tools.
  • Uses diagnostic tools to troubleshoot electromechanical faults, including issues related to motor-driven systems and power distribution components.
  • Operates a personal computer and related software; operates trucks and other vehicles; maintains shop including cleaning and organizing tools and shop equipment.
  • Contacts school and site personnel regarding maintenance and repair needs; performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Standard methods, codes, materials, practices, tools, and equipment used in the electronics technician trade; basic tools and procedures used in other/related trades.
  • Knowledge and understanding of preventive maintenance programs.
  • Safety practices necessary around tools and materials and for performing work with heavy physical requirements.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to identify hazards and implement safety precautions associated with the work; ability to handle hazardous materials associated with the job in accordance with established laws and policies.
  • Principles of electromechanical systems, including the operation of electronically controlled motors, actuators, and associated electrical circuits.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize characteristics of malfunctioning equipment; the range of conditions or problems that could cause various electronic equipment to malfunction; identify and correct specific problems causing equipment malfunction.

Ability to:

  • Draw rough sketches of electronics projects; read and work from sketches, plans, drawings, schematics, technical manuals, specifications and blueprints.
  • Work cooperatively with co-workers, site and District office staff, students and others; communicate clearly and effectively; understand and follow oral and written directions; maintain records; schedule and perform work to meet established timelines; work independently with little direction; learn characteristics of a wide variety of types and makes of electronic equipment; operate trucks and other vehicles; learn and perform duties of other trades if assigned; serve as lead on larger projects.
  • Identify and execute electronic system preventative maintenance (PM) procedures to prevent breakdowns, prolong equipment life and minimize interruptions impacting the customer.
  • Troubleshoot total building electronic systems to identify and correct system or equipment problems.
  • Diagnose faults in control circuits governing motor-driven systems, including relays, electronic controllers, and wiring failures.
  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
  • Inspect electronic systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Test electronic systems and continuity of circuits in electronic wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on electronic and mechanical control systems that integrate motorized components.
  • Plan layout and installation of electronic wiring, equipment and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Inspect, test, maintain logs and post required permits for building electronic systems according to code and industry standards.
  • If assigned, direct and train workers to install, maintain, or repair electronic wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
  • Maintains records and files, prepares reports, and orders supplies and equipment when assigned.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot motor starters, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and associated low-voltage power systems.
  • Operate assigned trade equipment skillfully and safely in conformance with applicable laws, regulations and policies.
  • Operate District-owned vehicles and to purchase tools, equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies and perform most work independently.
  • Understand and execute oral and written instructions; maintain simple work order and timekeeping written records; input work order and timekeeping data into timekeeping system.
  • Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Provide information to managers, supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates (if assigned) by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person. Speak, read and understand the English language proficiently.
  • Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.
  • Apply customer service skills to appropriately interact with District staff (our customers) in their place of work with minimal disruption of their work environment.
  • Communicate with people outside the District, representing the organization in a positive manner to customers, the public, and other external sources. This information may be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.
  • Understand and apply principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work.
  • Keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to your job.
  • Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
  • Repair or replace wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, aerial personnel lifts, boom trucks and roofs to install, maintain or repair electronic wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Identify failures in electromechanical components and determine necessary adjustments or repairs to motor-driven systems.
  • Place conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
  • Construct and fabricate parts, using hand tools and specifications.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as installing conduit and moving and lifting heavy objects.
  • Provide preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services.
  • Ability to stoop, twist, crawl, kneel and lift up to 50lbs throughout the day.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of fire alarm systems and related controls and equipment; OR A combination of related training and experience which equals five (5) years.
  • OR a combination of related training and experience equaling five (5) years, including work on electronically controlled mechanical systems.

License or Certificate required:

  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license. Minimum of Oregon State LEA Electrical License required.
