Position Details


POSITION SUMMARY
Provides expert level, skilled painting work in the repair and maintenance of District facilities. Prepares surfaces for painting and finishing; applies undercoats and finish coats using the full range of application methods and materials; mixes and matches paints and finishes; advises in the selection and storage of painting materials. Under general supervision, performs journey level work in the painting, finishing, and maintaining of a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures; may direct the work of other classified staff in the area; and perform related work as required.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares, primes, sands, seals, patches and paints furniture, surfaces, buildings, and fixtures utilizing all types of painting materials such as varnish, lacquer, shellac, enamel, latex, epoxy, waterproofing and heat resistant finishes.
  • Safely stores and labels all materials.
  • Estimates time and materials required; keeps computerized records and submits reports of work performed.
  • Erects scaffolding, rigging and ladders as necessary in a manner consistent with safety codes.
  • Reads and understands blueprints.
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
  • May train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area.
  • Assists and serves as back up to other Facilities employees.
  • Determines product systems compatible with prior applications
  • Applies paint using spray, brush and other methods
  • Researches, purchases and inventories equipment parts, chemicals and supplies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to:
1. Operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely; mix and match paints and varnishes;
2. Apply finishes to a wide variety of surfaces; estimate time and materials required on widely varied assignments;
3. Keep computerized records and prepare reports; perform heavy physical labor; coordinate work flow for multiple projects; read, comprehend, and work from plans and blueprints;
4. Train, coach, mentor and direct the work of others;
5. Follow and give oral and written instructions;
6. Maintain cooperative working relationships;
7. Demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.

Knowledge of:
1. Residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the painting trade; paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint removers, and related materials, and of their properties and application;
2. Applicable code requirements;
3. Methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;
4. Occupational hazards of the painting trade and precautionary measures to be observed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and
abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training: Completion of a qualified apprenticeship program in a related field; OR three (3) or more years of education or training in residential, commercial or industrial painting.
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade,

OR

Experience: Three (3) or more years of experience in residential and commercial/industrial practices and processes of the painting trade. Any combination of related training and experience which equals three (3) or more years.

License or Certificate required: Possession of a valid state driver’s license.

PAY RATE: $30.51/hour plus swing shift differential ($1.06/hour) with paid 30 minute lunch period

FTE: 1.0 (40 hours/week)

WORK YEAR: 260 days

WORK SCHEDULE: Swing Shift 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm Monday - Friday
