Portland Public Schools is seeking employees to work as AVID Program Tutors. Tutors will generally work 2-19 hours per week during the 2024-2025 school year, at the Middle and High School levels. Hours worked can vary due to school schedules and when the AVID tutorial is being offered in 6th-12th grade classrooms.
AVID PROGRAM
The AVID Tutor works with small groups of students in a structured process to facilitate students in asking higher- order questions to help each other deepen their understanding of content and inquiry skills. The tutoring program is a college and career readiness system that prepares students for college and career eligibility and long term success.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The below duties are done in person at the school sites.
1. Coach small collaborative groups using a curriculum focused on writing and inquiry.
2. Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts using the AVID methodologies.
3. Serve as positive role models, valuing education and its benefits.
4. Participate in AVID activities, and in-service training programs as assigned.
5. Provide academic support for students in rigorous courses- using AVID methodology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- AVID Tutor I - High school diploma.
- AVID Tutor II - Associate Degree or the equivalent of 72 quarter hours / (48 semester hours) of college courses.
- Must have a flexible work schedule. Hours are typically scheduled during the school day, M-F (primarily 9am -12 pm).
Preferred Qualifications :
1. Minimum of two years of work experience with adolescents is preferred.
2. Evidence, through reference and demonstrated skill, of good written and oral communication skills.
3. Evidence, through reference and demonstrated skill, of ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, instructional staff, and parents.
4. Experience and / or ability to work with and appreciate individuals from diverse backgrounds.
COMPENSATION
AVID Tutor I - $15.95 per hour (less than 72 quarter / 48 semester college credit hours)
AVID Tutor II - $18.20 per hour (minimum 72 quarter / 48 semester college credit hours or an associate degree - official transcripts required)
HOURS
Hours are typically scheduled during the school day, M-F (primarily 9am - 12pm). The tutor may work between 2- 19 hours per week
