Position Details

Responsibilities

  • Provide small group and 1 : 1 coaching for K-3 literacy teachers across 3-4 designated school sites
  • Effectively use observational data for feedback and instructional scaffolding
  • Co-plan, model and co-teach lessons along side educators
  • Complete PPS asynchronous Science of Reading modules and participate with designated schools in synchronous in person professional development
  • Review student formative assessments to determine next steps for instruction that leads to rigorous learning in school and district PLCs
  • Align all coaching work to Grade-level Standards Aligned State Standards
  • Support and Engage in Professional Development
  • Coordinate improvement efforts with all stakeholders (admin, specialists, vendors, educators, etc.)
  • Demonstrate understanding of adult and K-5 learner development, diversity, and cultural sensitivity, ensuring appropriate and challenging learning environments and interactions
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of professional learning and instructional coaching, recommending and implementing strategies for improvement in regularly scheduled meetings
  • Foster a culture of continuous instructional improvement to engage adult and K-3 learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem-solving with a focus on accelerating learning for our underserved students who are typically Black, Native, MLL and SPED
  • Promote a culture of high expectations and support for all students, aligning with the District's Racial Equity Policy ( Racial Educational Equity Policy )
  • Demonstrate commitment to the Portland Public Schools' Racial Equity and Social Justice Commitment, participating in related training and development activities ( RESJ Framework & Plan )

    Conflict / Complaint Resolution Process

    POSITION SUMMARY :

    Responsible for providing training, coaching and support to staff to ensure that teachers have the tools, resources and skills required to meet the needs of all students. Develop materials, work directly with students, and provide individual coaching to teachers on instructional materials.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

    Assist school staff in the use of relevant assessment and student data in curriculum and instructional planning and decision making.

    Work with staff to help them develop culturally proficient instruction.

    Work directly with students to support the instructional environment.

    Work with other staff in the school (individually and in groups) to help them improve their classroom practices, especially around strengthening literacy across the curriculum, utilizing culturally relevant instructional strategies based in best practices.

    Design and facilitate professional development for cross-disciplinary teams regarding culturally relevant and effective common reading and writing strategies.

    Design and facilitate professional development for staff regarding the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts and Literacy in History / Social Studies and Technical Subjects;and Mathematics.

    Provide direct support to teachers in planning for and facilitating demonstration lessons, with a particular focus on supporting teachers in implementing core curriculum using differentiated instructional approaches that meet the needs of all students.

    Work with school leadership on other instructional areas deemed important to the school.

    Perform other related duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION AND TRAINING :

    Incumbents must be properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as a Professional Educator Teacher. For positions identified within core academic areas, incumbents must be designated as highly qualified by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) to teach the designated core subjects. Core academic areas include Language Arts (English), Reading, Mathematics, Sciences, Foreign Language (except Chinese-Mandarin), Social Studies and Art. For positions identified with student counseling needs, a current Counseling Certification issued in the State of Oregon is required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • As applicable for specific positions, such as experience in an elementary school.
  • REQUIRED COMPETENCIES :

    Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience to provide culturally proficient instruction.

    Demonstrated expertise as a Middle School teacher with specific evidence of competence around secondary school literacy.

    Demonstrated ability to interact productively with peers in small and large group settings.

    Demonstrated expertise in relevant areas (secondary school literacy instruction, strategies for working in block classes, Common Core State Standards, sheltered instruction strategies, differentiating instruction, formative assessment, the DataWise process, facilitation).

    Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience related to culturally proficient instruction.

    Minimum three years classroom teaching experience preferred.

    Advanced Endorsements seen as an asset.

    Knowledge of :

    Academic achievement standards that align to district goals and create a comprehensive, rigorous and coherent curricular program.

    Research-based instructional strategies and models for improving instructional practices.

    Existing and emerging education and instructional technologies and software.

    Ability to :

    Advocate, model and implement Portland Public School's Educational Racial Equity policy.

    Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse backgrounds.

    Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.

    Manage student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with school, district and state policies, procedures and laws.

    Assign and grade class work, homework, projects, tests and assignments.

    Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.

    Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.

    Provide appropriate feedback on work.

    Encourage parent and community involvement.

    Provide student information to authorized individuals in a timely manner.

    Utilize relevant technologies to support and differentiate instruction.

    Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.

    Update records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.

    Prepare required reports on students and activities.

    Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and caregivers regarding student progress and student needs.

    Observe and evaluate student's performance and development.

    LICENSEREQUIREMENT : Must hold a full unrestricted teaching license issued by the Teacher Standards & Practices Commission (TSPC)

    COMPENSATION : $55,539 - $108,07 (Annual salary based on 1.0 FTE)
