Self Enhancement, Inc. is piloting an early learning literacy program in our Parent Engagement department entitle “Level Up”. The Level Up reading program is a culturally specific reading readiness program focused on fostering a love for reading. Level Up will work with children and families to increase exposure to positive reflections of our African-American culture, increase literacy at home, expand areas of vocabulary, creativity and communication. This position will actively engage with children, parents, early learning hubs, community partners and other stakeholders to ensure best practices in reaching positive outcomes of reading readiness and student success. The “Early Literacy Coordinator” reports to the Parent Engagement Manager at Self Enhancement Inc.
Self Enhancement, Inc. is launching a Ready 2 Read Program in our Parent Engagement department and has a new position, Early Literacy Coordinator to join the team and implement this pilot. Level Up is a culturally specific reading readiness program focused on fostering a love for books, reading and success. Level Up will work with children and families to increase exposure to positive reflections of our African-American culture, increase literacy at home, expand areas of vocabulary, creativity and communication. This position will actively engage with children, parents, schools, early learning hubs, community partners and other stakeholders to ensure best practice in reaching positive outcomes of reading readiness and student success. This position will collaborate across the agency including; the SEI African American Culture Center Library, Parent Child Development Services, SUN Early Kindergarten Transition programs, Childwatch services, Program Managers, and In-School Coordinators to build program awareness, recruitment of families and develop internal organizational strategy for implementation and sustainability. This position reports to the Parent Engagement Program Manager and is funded by the Albina Rockwood Promise Neighborhood Initiative.
This role will assist in strengthening key relationships across organizations, plan, problem solve, and measure results for students PreK-12.
PRIMARY JOB
· Develop and implement a year round literacy program for children ages birth to Pre-K at school sites and in the community.
· Engage and build parent collaboration and partnership for literacy and reading readiness success.
· Organize and facilitate Peer Parent Play groups to promote social skills and play therapy around books
· Organize and facilitate quarterly Cultural Literacy Nights and monthly Parent Education Workshops
· Engage in home visits and work with family to incorporate literacy/numeracy into everyday routines and track child’s progress for kindergarten readiness
· Develop and implement summer literacy initiatives and activities across a cradle to career continuum of participants
· Ensure program is in alignment with county, state, and school district kindergarten readiness goals and outcomes
· Participate in coaching SEI staff through student learning and culture, with potential opportunities for presentations, coaching, modeling and speaking engagements.
· Facilitate orientations as needed at schools to educate teachers and staff about the SEI reading program goals, outline, and activities.
· Collaborate with other content experts, develop curriculum and training materials
· Engage in a continual process of identifying barriers or critical issues in achieving literacy and reading readiness specifically as relates to black students.
· Identify culturally specific innovative approaches to ensure program sustainability
· Collect, measure and analyze data utilizing Results Based Accountability processes.
· Support data collection requirements and interfaces with MIS department regarding system implementation and process.
· Assists with recruiting volunteers within the community and SEI student body as they relate to this literacy program.
· Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and certifications for personal development.
· Accepts other appropriate duties/responsibilities as assigned by SEI management.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor's Degree in Education, Reading Certification or related field plus three (3) years of experience directly related to the position. Extensive experience may be substituted for education requirements.
· Literacy content expertise
· Knowledge of culturally specific work, practices, and engagement.
· Program management experience, preferably in an academic environment.
· Experience in program and curriculum development and implementation.
· Experience in parent engagement, coaching, and parent education workshop facilitation.
· Must have ability to engage diverse communities and community business partners.
· Excellent communication skills including written, verbal and presentation skills.
· Basic computer literacy and skills.
· Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to successfully motivate others and influence change.
· Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Must be insurable under SEI’s auto insurance.
· Must be detail oriented and highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines
· Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
· Must be a team player.
· Ability to use personal initiative and cooperation in performing job duties.
· Must have current and valid state driver’s license, in good standing with no insurability restrictions and must be insurable under SEI’s auto insurance policy.
