THE PLACE
The Harbor, Portland Rescue Mission’s men’s facility, located in NE Portland, is designed to support the restoration and growth of men impacted by homelessness, addiction, and life crises. This facility integrates addiction recovery, life-skills training, vocational development and spiritual growth in a safe, highly-relational environment. The ministry team of staff, interns, and volunteers serves to model Christ-like living to support the up to 36 participants in achieving lasting transformation.
THE POSITION
The Men’s Community Life Pastor serves program participants and the alumni community by building a foundation of biblical understanding in their lives through relationally-rooted evangelism and by intentionally cultivating a discipleship atmosphere at The Harbor. This position operates as part of the Community Life Team leading the Spiritual Formation aspects of The Harbor. The Community Life Pastor collaborates with other staff, interns, and volunteers in leading our program participants to growth in Christ through a variety of activities, groups, classes, meetings, and retreats.
THE ESSENTIALS
- Assure spiritual development is effectively cultivated and sustained in the lives of the men throughout their time at The Harbor, including all participants in the Discovery (5 week program) and New Life Program (1 year program) as well as Alumni
- Engage all staff, interns and volunteers in shepherding a dynamic, highly-relational and Christ-centered community
- Ensure Discovery program participants hear the gospel and receive a compelling invitation into Christian spiritual formation in collaboration with Discovery program staff
- Lead or oversee discipleship groups, spiritual growth classes, Saturday morning breakfasts
- Meet monthly with each program participant to assess, support and develop their spiritual growth
- Provide accurate and timely documentation of programmatic interactions via emails and DAP notes
- Lead and develop a robust aftercare program for Harbor Alumni in collaboration with the Director of Men’s Ministry
- Assure each participant seeks and appropriately engages in a partnering church and support partnering church relationships
- Support the Director of Men’s Ministry in overseeing dynamic group events that encourage spiritual growth and retention, including weekly Community Life meetings, graduations, and retreats
- Support ministry coverage at The Harbor, being available for program operations (e.g. UA/BA, exits, med call, crisis, on-call rotation) as needed
- Model and share biblical principles so that program participants grow towards Christian maturity in all areas of life
- Participate with PRM staff by stepping into key ministry opportunities as needed, including regular teaching/preaching and Christian discipleship
BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
- College degree in related field or equivalent experience
- Excellent knowledge of the Bible, experience in effective teaching of the Bible, and giftedness at instilling biblical truth into the lives of men
- Excellent communication skills, both in a group setting and one-on-one
- A personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and a testimony of continued growth in faith
- Ministers as a highly-relational, Christ-centered, joyful servant
- Spiritual maturity as defined by traditional Biblical standards
- Adheres to Portland Rescue Mission's Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics
- Desire to serve God in ministry to hurting men, women and children
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
