Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept
The mission of Portland State University’s Conduct & Community Standards Program is to promote a culture of integrity and community respect, through the development and enforcement of the Code of Student Conduct. The Student Conduct process aims to promote a campus environment that supports the overall educational mission of the University, protect the University community from disruption and harm, foster community, and support students’ intellectual, ethical and personal development.

Position Summary
The Director of Conduct and Conflict Resolution reports to the Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Student Life, as part of the Office of the Dean of Student Life, a division of Student Affairs. Duties include a wide range of leadership, administrative, and programmatic initiatives to further the work of the Office of the Dean of Student Life. The director works with staff in the Office of the Dean of Student Life, as well as other campus departments and partners, including University Housing and Residence Life, Athletics, Campus Public Safety, and the Office of Equity and Compliance. The Director of Conduct and Conflict Resolution plays an integral role in promoting a campus environment that supports the overall educational mission of the University and protects the University community from disruption and harm, encourages appropriate standards for behavior, and fosters ethical standards of engaged citizens.
This position acts as the senior conduct officer for student conduct cases; supervises and supports all responses to student issues, concerns, emergencies, and threats; and develops appropriate policies and procedures which apply to the programs of responsibility. The director coordinates the campus response to alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct in order to maintain a campus environment congruent with the university priorities of maintaining a safe and harassment-free campus climate, supporting student success, and maintaining fairness in the classroom.

The Director of Conduct and Conflict Resolution supervises the Conduct and Conflict Resolution Officer and trains, coaches, and supervises other staff assigned to adjudicate student conduct cases at PSU. The Director of Conduct and Conflict Resolution serves on appropriate committees; works cooperatively with other University departments to create co-curricular and experiential learning experiences for students; develops and supports plans to create a more open, diverse campus environment; engages in budget monitoring for supervised units; contributes to stewardship of positive and educationally purposeful campus climate; and contributes to assessment and evaluation of programs within the Office of the Dean of Student Life and Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge with FERPA, Title IX, VAWA, CLERY Act, due process and/or other legal principles related to student conduct administration
  • BA/BS in a related field with 4 years of related experience or Masters degree in a related field or JD with 2 years of related experience in student conduct
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, sound decision making and organizational skills, and ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality


Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience or equivalent in higher education on a campus with residence halls
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret federal, state, and local laws along with appropriate University Policies
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, planning, analytic, problem solving, and interpersonal skills, as well as excellent written and verbal skills
  • Experience on an urban campus.
  • Completed certification for Title IX Coordinators
  • Completion of trauma-informed investigation training

Work Days/Hours
Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, occasional on call hours on weekends and evenings as needed

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary range for this position is between $63,792 and $74,165, but may be negotiated above this rate, dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
