Human Resource & Safety Generalist
Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1987, the Potawatomi Zoo is home to more than 500 animals. This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced individual to join a rapidly growing facility. This position is meant to help focus attention on employee engagement, recruiting, safety, and overall guest experience. The Zoo currently has a staff of over 45 full time employees, with over 80 seasonal employees.
Position Description:
Reporting to the Executive Director, this is a multifaceted position, supporting the organization’s mission. The Human Resource Generalist is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and general training of staff, as well as providing support for managers as it relates to corrective actions, discipline, and employee terminations. The position includes the development and implementation of company policy and maintains and updates regular safety training. The position also administers employee benefits, workers compensation, bi-weekly payroll and other office administration duties as they pertain to the position and the needs of the staff. This individual will help drive excellent customer service training programs.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Recruitment, hiring, and general policy training for staff.
- Supporting managers and providing consultation for corrective action, discipline, and terminating employees.
- Ensure the organization’s compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
- Complete onboarding and orientation for approximately 80 seasonal employees each year and additional new full-time employees.
- Assist managers and provide support with performance evaluations and appraisals.
- Ensure job descriptions are up to date and compliant with all local, state and federal regulations.
- Administer employee benefits including medical, dental, vision, and Simple IRA.
- Developing/improving and implementing Zoo-wide policies and procedures as it relates to safety, employee engagement, and local and state workplace guidelines.
- Updating the Employee Handbook as needed.
- Implement, coordinate and participate in mandatory safety meetings.
- Implement and coordinate annual mandatory training for all staff within the HR platform.
- Serving as primary liaison to legal counsel, in coordination with the Executive Director.
- Complete all payroll related processes on a bi-weekly basis.
- Providing all staff with a safe place to discuss concerns and/or private matters as needed.
- Instilling an environment of inclusion and diversity within the Zoo.
- Assisting as needed within the zoo to ensure the zoo is held to the highest standards.
- Oversight of zoo uniforms as it relates to ordering, distributing, and tracking employee reimbursement.
- Key distribution and tracking for all staff
- Administer Worker’s Compensation Insurance
- Contact person for Unemployment Claims
Position Requirements:
Human resource management and/or coordination experience is mandatory including payroll. A bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration, Human Resources, or related field is preferred. Demonstrated leadership skills; excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to think both strategically and tactically. Needs to be able to communicate effectively and demonstrate professionalism. Recognizing and promoting excellent guest services is mandatory.
Full time with salary based on experience. Benefits available after a 30-day probationary period.
