What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Debate Camp Instructor position at Potomac Debate Academy?

We take pride in providing high quality debate and public speaking services to students in elementary, middle and high school.
Potomac Debate is hiring for our in-person sleepaway summer camp hosted at the University of Maryland, College Park from July 11 - 19th, 2025. Staff will be expected to be on-campus for the full duration of camp.
Why Teach At PDA Summer Camp?
Camp instructors have the opportunity to work with students across a variety of grade levels (from 6th - 12th) as well as experience levels (from novice to varsity) who are extremely committed and eager to learn.
Pay is $1,400 to $1,700 (commensurate with experience) for the full camp session for coaches. All travel, housing, and food costs are covered.
In addition, newly hired camp instructors will be given priority for year-round opportunities with PDA, including tournament coaching, classroom coaching, topic prep, and more.
Job Description:
Instructors are responsible for successful curriculum implementation, working with the Camp Director and fellow camp instructors, and helping students to learn and grow. Responsibilities include:
- Undergo staff trainings, planning, and curriculum development pre-camp (approximately 4-6 hours)
- Collaborate with co-lab leaders to develop, modify, and teach curriculum for assigned learning/experience level
- Co-lead instructional lab block for approximately 6-7 hours per day
- Co-lead / chaperone camp-wide 1-2 activities per day such as office hours and electives
- Create a positive, fun, and supportive learning environment to ensure every camper feels valued and encouraged.
- Facilitate administrative tasks such as attendance, staff meetings, and more to help ensure a smooth, well-planned learning experience for campers.
You're a good fit for this role if you...
- Have graduated HS, or will graduate by July 2025,
- Have prior debate experience, particularly in Public Forum,
- Have won state or national accolades, and/or have coached students to win state or national accolades,
- Care deeply about expanding debate as an activity and helping students find their voice.
