The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Athletics and the Head Athletic Trainer. In this role, the assistant athletic trainer will support Potomac school intermediate and upper school students through sports medicine efforts (immediate care, clinical evaluations and diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning efforts along with sideline injury care, game day coverage). This is considered a 10-month position, spanning from mid-August to mid-June each school year. The core hours will be from 10:30am to 6pm, or until games are finished.
The Potomac School has a Center for Athletics and Community that will rank among the best facilities in the mid-Atlantic region. The school has 72 interscholastic teams in grades 7-12 and supports 26 varsity teams. The school’s boys teams are members of the Mid-Atlantic Conference and the girls teams are members of the Independent School League.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform injury management and rehabilitation of all student related musculoskeletal injuries/sports medicine related injuries. Includes but not limited to injury prevention, concussion care and management, triage/trauma care and rehabilitation, pre/post-operative care and rehabilitation using patient-centered and evidence-based care.
- Utilize accepted NATA-BOC standards and state license guidelines for quality healthcare.
- Use an holistic, interdisciplinary approach when treatment planning and decision making as appropriate.
- Serve as a liaison between physicians, specialists, coaches, health committee, strength and conditioning coach, athletes and their parent(s)/guardian(s).
- Provide clear and regular communication, within limits of confidentiality, on student health matters between athletes, coaches, parent(s)/guardian(s), and health care providers.
- Serve as a member on The Potomac School health committee composed of athletic trainers, school counselors, and nurses.
- Maintain accurate records of injuries and treatments/rehab programs in Potomac’s chosen electronic medical record keeping systems.
- Coordinate with Head Athletic Trainer for practice schedule and game coverage during the school year including Saturday coverage, evenings, preseasons, minor holidays, and spring break. Sunday coverage on rare occasions.
- Assist Head Athletic Trainer review, rehearse, and implement EAP; support inventory management; review and implement quality improvement projects; housekeeping within Athletic Training facilities; support other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or related healthcare field, Master’s Degree preferred.
- Must have an active certification with the NATABOC
- Licensed or licensure eligible in the State of Virginia
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures including computer skills, database management and office machinery
- Valid Driver’s License at time of hire
- Ability to lift up to 75lbs
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends
- Ability to maintain professional certification with continuing education credits
- Knowledge of principles and methods for guidance regarding prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical injuries and concussions.
- Knowledge of human behavior, individual differences in ability, learning and motivation and performance standards
- Knowledge of principles and best practices of athletic training and measurements of effectiveness
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups in collaborative manner
