Description
The Potomac School Physical Education Department is seeking candidates for an anticipated full-time teacher opening for the 2025-2026 school year. This position reports to the Physical Education department chair and the assigned division head(s). The individual in this role is responsible for teaching PE classes to students in grades K-6 and coaching Intermediate and Upper School athletics.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach assigned K-6 physical education classes
- Collaborate with other physical educators in the PE department, preparing age-appropriate lesson plans
- Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods
- Assess student performance, writing reports on children's progress and communicating with parents
- Build relationships with students and work with them to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth
- Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
- Coach three seasons of intermediate school athletics and a minimum of one season of upper school athletics
- Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.
- Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
- Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.
- Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.
- Attend professional development workshops/conferences.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably with previous experience teaching physical education.
- Ability to communicate, motivate, and understand the students’ educational and emotional needs.
- Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community.
- Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement.
- Enthusiasm and joy for working with students.
