The Coatings Chemist will be responsible for performing technical development and formulation of paint systems that align with company business goals and objectives. They will serve as a technical expert that supports and tests product enhancements, quality improvements, and customer requests.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
- Manage QC laboratory personnel while collaboratively working with the team to develop and improve products
- Establishes guidelines and criteria for acceptance and testing of chemical raw-materials in finished blends; Research and develop new products while maintaining existing product lines through formulation and product optimization
- Evaluate raw materials and suppliers to make recommendations on use, supplier and cost; Develops specifications for new and / or reformulated product
- Conducts quality control testing and develop methods in a manufacturing environment; Coordinates and / or creates QC and R&D activities including formulation, processing, testing and application.
- Continually endeavors to improve the quality, production, and cost of existing formulas; Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve manufacturing issues related to quality and formulation
- Formulates new products, from development to commercialization, within defined company, industry, and regulatory parameters
- Prepares product registration documentation and product chemistry packages to meet regulatory requirements.
- Works directly with customers to confirm specification compliance, concerns and compatibility
- Works directly with State Departments of Transportation to authorize the use of our products.
- Works directly with sales representatives to improve current and new formulas
- Manages department with safety first to ensure compliance with Potters environmental, health, and safety policies
- Support quality control during production; Assist with production when needed
- Additional Duties assigned by manager
Minimum Requirements :
B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field
3 to 5 Years in a Coating or Chemical Industry
3 to 5 years of Manufacturing QC or R&D Lab Environment
3 to 5 years of Managing a staff, a plus
Knowledge of colorimetry, rheology, polymer chemistry and paint applications
Formulation Software experience
Knowledge of specifications and test methods from Federal and State DOTs, AASHTO, ASTM and EPA
