What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Mechanical Engineer position at Power Knot LLC?
Job Description
Job Description
About Us
Power Knot designs and manufactures the LFC® biodigester, a machine that digests waste food. We sell the LFC biodigesters globally to companies that want to divert waste from a landfill and greatly reduce their carbon footprint. LFC biodigesters vary in size and weigh from 20 kg to 2500 kg. In addition, we have developed a range of auxiliary products that are sold alone or in conjunction with the LFC biodigesters.
The Kind of Person we Need We have an opportunity for a person willing to take his or her career to the next level by joining a company in the rapidly growing environmental space. Power Knot sells into five continents with the majority of products sold outside of the USA. We have established distribution around the world, have been profitable for over a decade, are the market leader in this type of product,
and are expanding rapidly.
About You
We are seeking an enthusiastic person with a good personality to help expand our range of leading edge products. This is a position that you can “grow into,” taking on additional tasks over time. Although it is envisaged this person will be in the office most of the time, you may need to visit suppliers and customers. We will train you on how the products work, how we make them, and how we sell and support them.
This is a salaried (exempt) position. You will typically start work by 07 : 00.
Introduction
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for supporting existing products and for developing new products. The work involves hands-on work to verify assemblies and operational aspects of the design, and make changes as required.
Job description
This lists the full range of tasks that may be required. However, Power Knot will consider applicants that have the right aptitude but not the full experience to accomplish all the tasks :
1. Responsible for the overall mechanical aspects of the product, including designing, manufacturing, and fabricating the machine. Schedule different meetings to discuss the timeline and scope for the existing design projects as well as discuss the design issues and risks to provide different solutions.
2. Conduct research, and perform simulations and calculations for the mechanical design concepts of different products. Perform mechanical calculations regarding geometric dimensions (e.g., drum volume, shaft diameter, paddle size, hopper size, size of inlet openings, etc.), overloading considerations, material selection, thermal analysis, safety factors, etc. based on the data collected from research and the applicable mechanical standard literature.
3. Incorporate the knowledge of geometry, metal fatigue analysis, tolerance analysis, heat transfer analysis, and fluid dynamic analysis where appropriate in machine design.
4. Design sheet metal and solid modeling using Fusion 360 while satisfying the functionality and cost requirements related to the machining or fabrication process. Experience making complex sub-assemblies comprising various electro-mechanical components, which may have over 300 components.
5. Create 2D production drawings for the 3D models, including but not limited to the dimensions with specific tolerances, thread sizes, surface finish, material grade, datum features, and the extruded view or section view of detailed spots. Incorporate the knowledge of mechanical design standards, manufacturing process, cost management, geometric dimensioning, and tolerance analysis where appropriate.
6. Incorporate the knowledge of applicable engineering principles, mathematical dimensioning and tolerancing, alternative material selection, and optimization of structural design where appropriate.
7. Oversee and analyze all the design aspects of sheet metal design, transmission, plumbing, hydraulics, etc., and further review and approve the assembly procedures prepared by the production engineer for assembling the machine.
8. Lead the mechanical engineering team on the selection of materials for different products depending upon the application, the selection of plumbing pumps, and other parts depending upon the customer applications. Review and approve the BOM, drawings, documentation, and design to present to the upper management for final approval.
9. Evaluate the company’s current overall pipeline for different projects with the upper management and analyze if the project is under the scope of current skill sets and resources. Calculate and forecast the future product potential and analyze it with development costs, including hiring new resources, different prototypes, engineering costs, labor costs, etc.
10. Define roles and responsibilities for the team and ensure clear accountability for each project by setting up specific tasks, timelines, goals, etc. Review, revise, and approve the production engineer drawings and documentation, and maintain a database where other stakeholders can access the data.
11. Apply the knowledge of mechanical materials and failure analysis to calculate the stresses and displacements of parts and assemblies under both internal and external loads to validate the product performance and safety relative to the design. Based on the testing reports (e.g., diagrams, tables), apply the knowledge of continuum mechanics and stress analysis to analyze the impact of cyclic loads and the process of component failure on the structural life of products, and further generate an inspection report covering the failure reasons, etc.
12. Work with other cross-functional teams like electrical engineers, software engineers, and manufacturing managers to evaluate the overall product framework, which includes the wiring of different electrical components, sequence of assembly, ease in service, and ease in assembly, which later on will provide the framework for the standardization of process and workflows throughout the product lines in the company.
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
2. Minimum of four years mechanical engineering-related experience in sheet metal and MEP systems
3. Minimum of four years in creating 2D assembly drawings using 3D software
4. Minimum of four years experience in using GD&T, and ASME standards for assembly drawings and instructions
5. Able to use Google Sheets and Google Docs
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Must be proficient with, and able to use, Fusion360
2. Must have experience in sheet metal design in Fusion360 or Solidworks
3. Must have knowledge in engineering tolerances for part and assembly design

5. Must have a demonstrated capability to design complex mechanical systems
6. Thorough knowledge of SI units (Power Knot measures nothing in inches or pounds)
7. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
8. Excellent mechanical and technical skills
9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
10. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Language Requirements
Must be able to communicate in, and create design documents in, English Language Requirements Regarded as Beneficial
Ability to read, write, and speak Chinese
Environment
