Summary
Directs and coordinates educational, administrative, and counseling activities of the school by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Assists the Superintendent by:
- Develop and evaluate educational programs to ensure conformance to state and school board standards.
- Develop and coordinate educational programs through meetings with staff, review of teachers’ performance/activities, and issuance of directives.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary according to due process to the rights of students.
- Establish and maintain relationships with colleges, community organizations, and other schools to coordinate educational services.
- Requisition and allocate supplies, equipment, and instructional materials as needed.
- Assume responsibility of coordinating school level issues as they relate to transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
- Direct preparation of class schedules, cumulative records, and attendance reports.
- Monitor school building and property to ensure safety and security.
- Plan and monitor the various record-keeping systems of the school to ensure that required reports are accurate and submitted on time.
- Develop and administer educational programs for students with mental or physical disabilities.
- Work with school staff and community to maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning and appropriate student behavior.
- Supervise the integration of technology in the curriculum.
- Advise central office personnel of staff needs, and participate in the recruitment, employment, assignment, promotion, transfer, non-renewal, and dismissal of certified and classified personnel.
- Conduct safety inspections and safety drills practice activities.
- Plan, develop and evaluate the instructional programs with the school faculty and staff in a team approach.
- Plan and develop pertinent staff development to enhance faculty professional growth.
- Provide for the continuing development and implementation of an effective instructional program through classroom supervision and instructional leadership.
- Supervise and evaluate the performance of each member of the school staff and establish an individual program for improvement consistent with the division’s staff development program.
- Organize and supervise matters related to student registration, scheduling, orientation and the development of the master schedule.
- Work with other school and division administrators to provide for horizontal and vertical articulation of the instructional program.
- Foster effective home-school communication by providing opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss student progress and other matters of mutual concern, and by encouraging community involvement in school activities.
- Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all student activities and athletic programs (in conjunction with the Student Activities Director, where applicable).
- Ensure appropriate student discipline at all school-sponsored events.
- Promote good working relationships among staff members.
- Devise and administer a school budget, utilizing all available funds, which is consistent with division instructional and administrative goals; supervises the maintenance of accurate bookkeeping and accounting of school funds.
- Review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences and/or professional literature.
- Orient newly assigned staff members and assist with their development.
- Maintain proper utilization, care and attractiveness of buildings and grounds.
- Possess leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with pupils, teachers, and parents.
- Demonstrate the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written communication and effectively interact with parents, students, teachers, administrators, classified employees, and the community.
- Demonstrate the responsibility for own professional growth by seeking continuing education and in-service training programs.
- Demonstrate professionalism by working cooperatively with other staff members; using support services when needed; ensuring that oral communications are clear, accurate and grammatically correct; respecting the confidential nature of professional information; submitting reports accurately and punctually; and complying with administrative directives, and School Board policy.
- Demonstrates good work habits to include punctual and regular attendance.
- Respond to building intrusion/fire alarms.
- Perform other administrative duties that may be assigned by the superintendent, or designee.
- Responsibilities may differ according to school level assignment.
Qualifications
Must hold or possess Postgraduate Professional License with the appropriate endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
Education and/or Experience
Master’s Degree
At least three years of successful, full-time experience as a teacher, supervisor, or administrator.
Demonstrated the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers and parents.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or the public.
Reasoning/Other Abilities
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Physical Demands
Work involves limited physical tasks and may involve infrequent operation of office equipment. Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a school environment.

Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the School Board policy and administrative regulations. The criteria for the evaluation of job performance are based upon the performance standards established in Section 22.1-253.13:5 (Standard 5) of the Code of Virginia. Sources of data used as evidence of meeting the performance standards will include self-evaluation, informal observations/site visits, documentation log, teacher/staff surveys, and SMART goal setting.
