Job Title: Secondary Assistant Principal

Reports to: Principal
Summary
Support the principal in creating and sustaining a high-quality educational environment aligned with state and federal regulations, as well as the mission, policies, and objectives of the School Board. Engage with students, parents, faculty, and staff to foster collaboration, maintain records and reports, and uphold school-wide expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
- Assist with the overall management of the school by interpreting and enforcing policies and regulations at both the school and district levels.
- Contribute to the development of a student-centered, results-driven culture that promotes collaboration and continuous learning.
- Ensure the implementation of the district-approved curriculum, emphasizing the development of 21st-century skills in all students.
- Support compliance with federal, state, and local guidelines related to standardized assessments and special education programs.
- Play a key role in organizing and facilitating professional development opportunities that promote growth for teachers and staff.
- Serve as acting principal when needed.
- Assist in developing class schedules, coordinating extracurricular activities, and managing student and teacher assignments.
- Collaborate with department heads and faculty to develop budget requests that align with instructional and operational needs.
- Oversee procurement processes, manage inventory, and ensure accurate record-keeping of instructional materials and school resources.
- Support operational logistics, including transportation, custodial services, cafeteria operations, and safety protocols.
- Monitor and support student attendance initiatives, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with attendance policies.
- Help maintain a positive school climate by addressing discipline matters and managing behavioral interventions when necessary.
- Work alongside parents, faculty, and student organizations to enhance educational programs and related activities.
- Maintain and organize essential documentation, preparing reports as needed.
- Identify and support students with specialized needs by coordinating with school specialists and external resources.
- Supervise designated teachers and departments, providing guidance and support as directed by the principal.
- Communicate curriculum goals and instructional expectations to teachers, students, families, and the broader community.
- Participate in instructional oversight through classroom observations, learning walks, and structured feedback sessions to enhance teaching and learning practices.
- Assist teachers in evaluating instructional strategies, refining lesson plans, and implementing effective classroom management techniques.
- Help coordinate and oversee school counseling services to ensure comprehensive student support.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the school.
- Supervise students and visitors during school and at extracurricular activities.
- Attend school sponsored events and functions that are held to recognize student achievements.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of school calendars, website, handbook, schedules, bulletins, and publicity.
Qualifications
Postgraduate Professional License with the appropriate endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
Education and/or Experience
Master’s Degree
At least three years of successful, full-time experience as a teacher.
Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers and parents.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all programs in a school; skill in oral and written communications; ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students, teachers, support staff and associates.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or public.
Reasoning/Other Abilities
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Physical Demands
Work involves limited physical tasks and may involve infrequent operation of office equipment. Above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a school environment.

Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the School Board policy and administrative regulations. The criteria for the evaluation of job performance are based upon the performance standards established in Section 22.1-253.13:5 (Standard 5) of the Code of Virginia. Sources of data used as evidence of meeting the performance standards will include self-evaluation, informal observations/site visits, documentation log, teacher/staff surveys, and SMART goal setting.
