Warehouse Manager

Reports to: Company Owners

Prairie Moon Nursery provides one of the largest seed and plant collections available for retail sales in the eastern United States. Since 1982, we have enjoyed steady growth as one of the most reputable mail-order and internet suppliers for native wildflowers and grasses. We carry over 700 native species and serve everyone from backyard gardeners to large government agencies. Our company culture is relaxed, informal, and highly rewarding.

Our warehouse is the heart of our operation, and we’re looking for a hands-on, forward-thinking Warehouse Manager to keep things running smoothly and help us grow. In this role, you will oversee all order picking, packing, shipping, and custom and premade mix designs, along with managing all seed inventory. Someone who is a self-starter, organized, detail-oriented, and has excellent time management skills will thrive in this role!

Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development

  • Supervise, train, and support a team of 6–10 seasonal and year-round staff.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative work environment by building strong relationships and assisting with tasks across the warehouse as needed.

Operational Excellence

  • Manage all warehouse activities, including inventory management, order picking, packing, shipping, palletizing, and handling LTL shipments.
  • Drive process improvements to boost order accuracy, reduce waste, and enhance customer satisfaction.

Forward-Thinking Innovation

  • Assess current practices and recommend improvements to optimize productivity.
  • Research and integrate technologies, tools, and systems to modernize operations.
  • Plan and implement initiatives to prepare for growth and focus on sustainability.

Inventory/Supply Management and Logistics

  • Collaborate with the Seed Intake and Sales teams to monitor inventory levels and notify the Procurement Specialist of shortages.
  • Conduct regular inventory audits to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
  • Monitor supply levels and notify the Purchasing Manager when items are low.
  • Oversee preparation, organization, and creation of premade mixes and custom orders.

Collaboration and Strategy

  • Partner with the Marketing Director, Seed Intake, Inventory Coordinator, and other departments to align warehouse operations with company goals.
  • Participate in monthly manager meetings and strategic planning sessions to improve teamwork, increase efficiency, and prepare for seasonal and long-term business needs.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3 years in warehouse management; experience with seeds or plants is a plus.
  • Innovative Mindset: Proven ability to identify problems, propose solutions, and implement improvements.
  • Leadership Skills: Strong experience leading and inspiring teams in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency with ERP systems, inventory management tools, and basic office software.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50 pounds, work in varying environmental conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills and commitment to accuracy.
  • Commitment to Sustainability: Passion for supporting environmental goals through efficient and responsible practices.

Compensation/Benefits

  • The salary range for this position is between $50,000 and $60,000 annually.
  • Begin accruing paid time off (PTO), including vacation, sick, and holiday pay, at a rate of 0.833 hours per hour worked after 90 days of employment. This totals approximately four weeks (166.6 hours) of PTO after one year and 90 days.
