POSITION TITLE: SHIPPING MANAGER
REPORTS TO: Plant Manager
SUMMARY
Manage all logistic operations for the facility to include the supervision of forklift drivers and unitizer operators, delivery of product to customers, timely/accurate billing, management of finished goods inventories, and oversight of all shipping materials (pallets, banding, …).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work with Pratt Logistics to ensure deliveries are made in the most cost-efficient and time-saving manner possible.
Supervise Forklift Drivers and Unitizer Operators in the daily routine of moving finished product to meet the customer's complete satisfaction.
Attend daily Scheduling Meeting and assist the Plant Scheduler in meeting our customers' requirements.
Prepare work orders for and coordinate repairs of trucks, trailers, forklifts, dock plates, dock doors, and all other shipping designated equipment.
Coordinate with Sales Service the delivery of the customer orders on time.
Work with Specialty Sales in receiving and transporting orders.
Keep upper management informed of problems or situations that may affect the performance of your department.
Enforce corrective action procedures when applicable and conduct meetings with the violating employees and union representatives.
Conduct weekly Production/Safety meetings with departmental personnel.
Adheres to daily production schedule. Makes recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality, delivery and service goals.
Communicate with necessary supervision to avoid problems between shift changes.
Improve career skills by enrolling yourself in seminars, technical courses, and related college courses, with approval of your manager.
Establish high morale within department by showing fairness, consistency, and an interest in employee problems. Maintain confidentiality.
Develop strong rapport with various freight lines.
Implement, maintain, and support all company policies and procedures, including union contract safety program, and good housekeeping.
Additional duties may be assigned by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises all employees assigned to the department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; conflict resolution; team building; coaching and leading employees to improve; addressing complaints and resolving problems; documentation; and setting an example of superior behavior, attitude and performance.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED.
Two years experience as a Forklift Operator and/or Truck Driver.
One year shipping experience.
Candidates are PREFERRED who offer the following:
College and/or related technical experience.
One year supervisory experience as a proven manager of at least five people.
Four years experience in the corrugated box industry.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Able to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy. Able to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurement, volume and rate. Able to apply concepts of high school math.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
The individual must have a working knowledge of the following:
Equipment design and capabilities that can be translated into efficient operation. This also supports the supervisor's role of teacher and trainer for his/her personnel.
Cost issues in order to make daily decisions that will reduce overall costs and will help the supervisor find areas that require improvement.
Quality standards.
Regulatory requirements including but not limited to wage and hour requirements, environmental and waste minimization, company policies, and personnel requirements including OSHA, DEQ and EEO.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
May be required to maintain a current Lift Truck Operator License.

The performance of the supervisor will be measured as follows:
Operating standards - the supervisor will need to meet or exceed the Operating Standards in the areas of quality, cost, safety, customer satisfaction and productivity. Such standards will be set annually and communicated to the supervisor.
Personal growth - while the company will provide the tools to assist the supervisor to grow professionally the responsibility for moving forward lies with the individual. Each year there will be goals developed and agreed to by the supervisor and his/her superior.
Employee relations - through observations the supervisor will be evaluated regarding his/her skills and advancements in the areas of motivational techniques and results, positive and corrective/constructive feedback, subordinate development and creating a positive work environment.
Creativity - this will be evaluated by how active the supervisor is in participating in advancing the business through new and innovative ideas.
