Position: Purchaser Reports to: Plant Manager
Manages purchasing and distribution of raw materials, equipment, machinery, and supplies in a manufacturing plant. Establishes and maintains vendor relationships, contract negotiation, pricing, logistics to ensure sufficient inventory and supplies for consistent, uninterrupted production and workflow. Works with engineering and sales teams to provide fast-paced quotes to customers.
· Promote a safe working environment. Identify and demonstrate use of machine safety and personal protection equipment. Demonstrate compliance with safety procedures, OSHA requirements and guidelines.
· Establishes procedures to accomplish procurement of a variety of materials in a cost-effective manner.
· Prepares and issues purchase orders with consultation and in support of plant departments.
· Reviews and monitors requisitions, supply sources, supplies, quotations, terms, etc.
· Negotiates lowest possible cost for materials balanced against optimum quality and schedule needs
· Recommends major purchases of materials on the basis of anticipated changes in prices or unusual availability status.
· Proposes and implements continuous improvement projects to improve cost, efficiency, and productivity.
· Participates in contract negotiations and vendor selection; solicits and evaluates proposals for materials.
· Monitors performance and capabilities of vendors to ensure maintenance of deliver, quality, and price commitments; resolve disputed claims for unsatisfactory materials, products or equipment.
· Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and Gemba’s.
Preferred Skills/Experience
· Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing effective manufacturing.
· Knowledge of purchasing function—requisitions, research and selections of potential suppliers, negotiation of pricing and terms, and issue of purchase orders.
· Effective oral, written communication skills, interpersonal skills, leadership, computer literacy.
· Strong negotiation skills and persuasiveness; time management with ability to multi-task in meeting tight deadline constraints.
· Analytical and critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making.
· High level of attention to detail, organizational skills, and follow-through.
· Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of five years of direct experience in managing purchasing functions preferred.
