The Presbyterian Home for Children, a ministry of the Presbyterian Churches of Alabama, cares for boys and girls of all ages and their female caregivers who find themselves homeless because of poverty, abuse, or abandonment. The Home is accredited by EAGLE, the world’s only faith-based accrediting body for ministry to children.
Presbyterian Home for Children is looking for a talented accountant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have exceptional attention to detail, a strong work ethic, an advanced understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, and will be able to perform the tasks outlined below with minimal supervision required.
Purpose
To assist the President, the Controller, and the Organization, in any manner, so that Presbyterian Home for Children can maintain financial stability and fulfill its mission statement of providing a safe haven for children and caregivers in a Christian and faith-based atmosphere. The Accountant coordinates and assumes daily responsibility for all bookkeeping services and works in tandem with the Controller regarding the accounting functions and practices of the Organization. The Accountant maintains financial accountability and stewardship in a manner that exemplifies the highest goals of the Organization.
Summary
Under the Controller’s direction, the Accountant will plan, organize and direct the Organization’s supportive services to include accounting, bookkeeping, cash management, payroll, and the administration of employee benefits. The work involves various clerical and routine accounting tasks, to include the coding of transactions, posting entries, verifying and reconciling input to financial reporting system output, processing payments and payroll, and assisting in the preparation of billings and other financial reports. The Accountant will also respond to inquiries and contact other departments and/or vendors to resolve a variety of problems.
The Accountant will assist the President and the Controller in the operations and strategic planning of the company as it relates to budget planning, financial and resource planning/administration, including the oversight of insurance policy renewals and employment.
The Accountant will facilitate the company’s process of achieving its financial objectives by anticipating requirements, submitting information for budget preparation, scheduling expenditures, monitoring costs and analyzing variances.
The Accountant will complete all aspects of accounting, including payroll, administration of employee benefits, general ledger, revenue and accounts payable processes within QuickBooks Online, including reconciliation of bank accounts and credit card statements with appropriate account allocations.
Qualifications
· Five or more years of experience in accounting, preferably with HR and supervisory experience in a not-for-profit organization.
· A degree from an accredited college or university in the area of accounting, finance, or general business.
· A working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards; experience with accrual-basis accounting, governmental and A-133 single audits preferred.
· An Advanced level of skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and similar data-entry computer applications and extensive knowledge of personal computers and computer networks; experience with QuickBooks Online preferred.
· Knowledge of cash management principles and procedures, invoicing procedures, accounts payable procedures, and account balancing and reconciling procedures.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Reading comprehension and critical thinking skills strong enough to read and interpret financial documents.
· Conduct yourself both on and off campus in an ethical and moral fashion that exemplifies Presbyterian Home for Children’s mission and faith statements; letter of recommendation from current Paster strongly preferred.
· Ability to be trusted with confidential data such as payroll information.
· Ability to be insurable by the Organization’s risk management insurance.

Duties
· Perform all bookkeeping functions of the Organization, to include all General Ledger data entry, including journal entries, and the maintenance of banking activities and financial reporting tasks.
- Oversee and monitor the administration of employee benefits and payroll tax activity to assure timely and accurate payment to approved vendors and agencies.
· Reconcile development revenue totals to actual deposits, weekly if not daily, and resolve all exceptions.
· Manage cash and cash-related transactions; issue receipts, record and balance cash funds; enter cash transactions into subledgers timely and accurately; prepare and deliver bank deposits.
· Solve problems as they arise by researching for solutions, contacting department leaders and/or vendors, responding to inquiries, and involving the Controller and/or President when necessary.
· Assist with monthly financial reporting in an accurate and timely fashion, producing reports such as a monthly flow of revenue and expenses and their relationship to the board-approved annual operating and capital budgets, as well as other statements and cash flow information.
· Assist in the preparation of financial reports for the Board of Trustees and its Finance and Audit Committees.
· Collaborate with President and the Controller to develop annual operating and capital budgets; prepare reports for monitoring and analyzing same.
· Follow all policies and procedures related to internal controls without exception.
- Perform all accounting work in a manner that is consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Assist auditor as needed with the annual audit.
- Adhere to all accreditation standards as required by EAGLE.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the President and the Controller.
