Job Overview:
As a Process Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety processes and procedures to ensure the safety and compliance of our clients’ operations. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify potential hazards, analyze risks, and design safety measures to mitigate these risks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement process safety management programs in accordance with industry standards and regulations across various industries.
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA).
- Perform process safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Investigate process safety incidents and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
- Collaborate with clients’ engineering and operations teams to design and implement safety solutions.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs tailored to client demands.
- Participate in safety review meetings and provide expert guidance on process safety matters.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, regulations, and emerging technologies related to process safety.
- Perform and manage engineering work associated with combustible dust hazards
- Review and provide QA/QC for DHA reports prepared by internal staff
- Conduct site inspections to evaluate compliance with industry and insurer standards
- Develop dust testing recommendations and analyze dust test results
- Conduct third-party review and acceptance testing of explosion protection systems
- Develop explosion protection system designs and budgetary cost estimates
- Conduct electrical classification assessments for NEC Chapter 5 compliance
- Prepare performance-based designs for combustible dust-handling facilities
- Investigate combustible dust fires and explosion incidents
- Develop and execute business development plans for areas related to combustible dusts
- Lead DHA teams and develop prioritized, actionable written recommendations.
- Support multiple projects while meeting deadlines and working with a variety of personnel under a range of conditions (i.e. office, industrial, accident, and test range sites.)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in process safety engineering, preferably in industrial field operations.
- In-depth knowledge of process safety regulations, standards, and best practices (e.g., OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA, API, etc.).
- Experience with process hazard analysis methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, What-If, etc.).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- High-level written and oral communication skills to write reports, business correspondence, presentations, etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge of engineering practices, process safety principles, and industry standards applying to combustible dust handling operations, including: NFPA codes/standards 68, 69, 70 (classified locations), 77, 484, 499, 505, 652, 654, 664, and 2113
- Candidate must have broad knowledge of engineering practices, process safety principles, and industry standards that apply to combustible dust handling operations, including the following:
- Electrical safety and NEC compliance for classified/hazardous locations
- Dust collection system analysis and design
- Bulk solids processing equipment (e.g., pneumatic conveyance systems)
- Instrumentation and controls
- Housekeeping methods (i.e., for combustible dust control)
- Emergency planning
- Ability to write consulting reports.
- Previous knowledge and experience in combustible dust hazard analysis (DHA) and hazardous area classification (HAC) are a plus.
- Professional certifications (e.g., CSP, PE, CCPSC) are a plus.
