The Prince George's County Department of Social Services (DSS) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Crisis Intervention Specialist (Counselor 1G) position Grade G18 in the Family Investment Division.
About the Position
The employee shall serve as a Crisis Intervention Specialist in the Family Investment Division. The Crisis Intervention Specialist will report directly to the District Manager. The Crisis Intervention is responsible for addressing the needs of customers with barriers (i.e.: domestic violence, physical and mental health disabilities, substance abuse issues, unstable housing/homelessness, and criminal history) requiring intervention to stabilize their approach to independence. At all times, the employee in this position will provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers that meets or exceeds department standards.
The Crisis Intervention Specialist position requires a thorough understanding of the domestic violence syndrome including the multiplicity of causes, psychological and physiological stressors, societal reactions/concerns, impact on the family/children, barriers to treatment, and availability of community resources and requires the ability to assess and address barriers that have prevented persons receiving TCA and/or food stamps for 60 months or longer from discontinuing these services and requires the ability to coordinate services with other public and private organizations.

We do this by providing intervention services that strengthen families, protect children and vulnerable adults, encourage self-sufficiency and promote personal responsibility. We assist our customers through such programs as Temporary Cash Assistance, Food Supplement Program, Medical Assistance, Emergency Assistance, and Foster Care and Adoption Service.
ADMINISTRATION:
- Develops an extensive network of wraparound services to address the individual needs and concerns of the customer.
- Develops an intervention/treatment plan that will result in the customers’ needs being met.
- Monitors the implementation of the intervention/treatment plan.
- Reviews the intervention/treatment plan monthly with the customer.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the intervention/treatment plan.
- Follows the method of protocol in opening cases, documentation of work, and closing cases.
- Assists in obtaining any documentation needed to determine eligibility for services.
- Be available to attend training and workshops that will enhance their level of work.
CLINICAL SERVICES:
- Work within the local district offices to support customers who are seeking DSS services.
- Be available to engage customers who are in crisis or need to exceed the benefits offered at the local district office.
- Assess the needs of customers in crisis and make referrals to other DSS services or community-based social support programs.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED:

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's or Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology
- A minimum of 2,000 hours of supervised clinical experience in Professional Counseling.
- Must possess one of the following licenses/certifications:
- LCPC: Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
- LGPC: Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor
- LCADC: Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor
- LGADC: Licensed Graduate Alcohol and Drug Counselor
- LCSW-C: Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical
- LCSW: Licensed Certified Social Worker
- LMSW: Licensed Masters Social Worker
- LCP: Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Additional Requirements:
- Knowledge of counseling and interviewing skills and techniques.
- Knowledge of the physiological and psychological effects of drug addiction.
- Knowledge of existing referral agencies and community resources.
- Knowledge of developing treatment plans and providing treatment to individuals with significant mental or emotional disorders through individual and/or group counseling.
- Knowledge of federal, state, local, and agency policies and procedures governing the delivery of treatment services.
- Knowledge of a variety of current and emerging helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance use, abuse, and dependence.
- Knowledge of ethical and behavioral standards of conduct in the helping relationship.
- Knowledge of principles of learning and a variety of educational techniques.
- Knowledge of medical and pharmacological resources in the treatment of substance use disorders.
- Knowledge of the philosophy, practices, policies, and outcomes of the most generally accepted and scientifically supported models of treatment, recovery, relapse prevention, and continuing care for addiction and other substance-related problems.
- Knowledge of the established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, treatment modalities, and placement criteria within the continuum of care.
- Ability to work effectively with clients having substance abuse, emotional, behavioral, or other related problems.
- Ability to evaluate/diagnose client problems and recommend an appropriate treatment program.
- Ability to assume responsibility and demonstrate initiative under general supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to respond to emergencies.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other professionals and agencies.
- Ability to establish and maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients with substance use disorders, their families, and significant others.
- Ability to identify the support systems and community resources available to clients, their families, and significant others.
- Ability to identify and use the role of family, social networks, self-help groups, and community systems in the treatment and recovery process.
- Ability to make constructive therapeutic responses when the client's behavior is inconsistent with stated recovery goals.
