The Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections, & Enforcement is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Construction Standards Code Enforcement Officer position, grade G29, in the Inspections Division.

About the Position
This is supervisory and administrative enforcement and inspection work responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the unit/sectional activities of subordinate inspectors within functional areas of construction (i.e., site/building residential/commercial materials, right of way, sediment/erosion/ storm water control).
This position administers and enforces applicable codes within specific functional areas by monitoring inspectional and code enforcement activities in order to achieve code compliance. Significant aspects of the work includes explaining codes, ordinances, and regulations to employees, engineers, contractors, and the general public in order to resolve problems that hinder compliance. This position functions as a mid-level manager who directly supervises Inspector IV positions and indirectly their subordinates. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level manager and is reviewed for adequacy and conformance to established departmental policies, procedures and practices.
All DPIE employees are considered "Essential" and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural or man-made disasters and during other special operations as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report to work or remain at work when others are granted Administrative Leave. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may include physical activities, such as repeated bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching and lifting up to thirty (30) pounds.
About The AgencyThe Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is responsible for coordinating and enforcing standards that control what goes on before, during, and after construction. Staff from nine agencies, who work cooperatively on permit processing, business licensing, plan review, inspection and enforcement comprise Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement. The Mission of the Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement is to promote economic development in Prince George's County and protect the safety of County residents, businesses, and visitors through efficient permitting, inspection and licensing services to ensure compliance with established building, zoning and property standards codes.
Examples of Work
- Incumbent is responsible for the planning and administration of residential/commercial inspection and enforcement programs for construction projects in the Prince George’s County.
- Establishing goals and objectives that are consistent with the overall mission and goals of the Division; recommends changes, as necessary, to inspection procedures, confers with the Assistant Associate Director and the Associate Director in matters regarding staffing, policies, budget and procedures, cooperates with and/or coordinates inspection activities with other Departments/Agencies, Municipalities and the State of Maryland.
- Consults with design professionals in dealing with issues regarding third party certifications; supervises staff assigned to the Commercial Building and Electrical Inspection Sections.
- Maintains records, performs follow-up inspections on violations and complaints; systematically screens all assigned inspection records; conducts studies and investigations in support of code enforcement activities undertaken by the Department/Division; responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all vehicles and/or equipment assigned to the Section; attends meetings, hearings and training on Building Code Enforcement related problems; and participates as a critical and essential employee.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management or closely related fields, plus

Four (4) years experience working with Building, Fire Electrical, Mechanical, Accessibility Codes and related County, State and Federal laws and ordinances
- One (1) year of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
- An equivalent combination of at least eight (8) years of relevant education and experience of the type required for this position will be considered.
- Ten (10) years of experience in Commercial Building, Fire, Electrical, or Mechanical inspections of State and Federal laws and ordinances.
- Five (5) years of supervisory experience as a Construction Standards Inspector specializing in Commercial or Residential Building, Fire, Electrical, or Mechanical inspections.
Professional licensure or construction code certifications are desired.

Conditions of Employment: Upon selection, the candidate must:
- Be willing to participate as "essential," when needed, during emergency operations.
- Possess a valid driver's license and provide a Certified copy of the current Motor Vehicle Administration report that reflects a satisfactory driving record.
- Be physically able to lift and carry at least thirty (30) pounds repetitively.
- Be able to work outdoors in various weather, dust, weather emergencies, and other emergency conditions.
- Pass a pre-employment physical to include alcohol and drug testing and a background investigation.
- Must pass a written exam during the interview. •
- Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
- Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
- May be required to successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
- Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies.
- Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
