The Prince George's County Office of Central Services is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Heavy Automotive Technician I / II (Heavy Equipment Mechanic 1A / 2A), grade A15 / A16 , in the Fleet Management Division .

About the Position

This is an entry-level skilled mechanical role responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing / servicing and performing preventive maintenance on medium to heavy-sized motorized vehicles / equipment such as automobiles, vans, small trucks, and buses. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Garage Supervisor and is evaluated in terms of adherence to established work practices and procedures.

Functional Requirements : Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over); reaching above shoulders; use of fingers; walking; standing; crawling; straight putting; pushing; kneeling; repeated bending; climbing; use of legs and arms; operation of crane, truck, tractor or motor vehicle; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20 / 20 and to 20 / 40 in other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; hearing aid permitted.

Work Environment : Working outside and inside; excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness; dry atmospheric conditions; excessive noise; intermittent dust; silica, asbestos, etc.; fumes, smoke or gases; solvents (degreasing agents); grease and oils; working around machinery with moving parts; working around moving objects or vehicles; working on ladders or scaffolding; explosives; vibrations; working closely with others or alone. Work in this class requires incumbents to wear safety items / uniforms while on duty and may require protracted or irrgular work hours.

The Office of Central Services is a multifaceted agency of the Prince George's County Government providing government-wide, mission critical support services in the areas of facilities operations and management, building design & construction, real estate services, fleet management, and general services. Examples of Work

  • Utilize computer-based diagnostic equipment, service / parts manuals to analyze and correct vehicle problems.
  • Perform maintenance, inspection, and repairs of the following vehicle components :

Engine and drive train.

  • Computerized electronic ignition.
  • Fuel / emissions systems.
  • Suspension and steering related components in the front and rear drive vehicles.
  • Air conditioning, heating, and cooling systems.
  • Brake systems.
  • Perform and diagnose minor road repairs and tow disabled vehicles in compliance with Maryland Vehicle Law and Division policies.
  • Perform test drive on all vehicles to confirm proper completion of repairs.
  • Enter edits and complete work orders using the current computerized database.
  • Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description, however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
  • Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • One (1) year of experience / training in the mechanical field servicing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on a variety of medium to heavy motorized vehicles equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possess or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire a Class B Commercial Driver's License.

    Conditions of Employment : Upon selection, the candidate must :

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • Be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds.
  • Possess or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire a Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Department of Transportation Medical Certification Card.
  • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record that reflects a satisfactory driving history.
  • Pass a thorough physical examination.
  • Furnish and maintain tools in a serviceable condition.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with six (6) points or less.
  • The incumbent in this position is considered an "Essential" employee and may be required to report to work during natural or manmade disasters, and during special operations / activities as assigned. Please note that "Essential" employees are expected to report or remain at work when other employees are granted Administrative Leave.

    General Plan Information :

    The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

    A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

    Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse.     New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.

    The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.

    After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and / or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
