Introduction: 
The Prince William County Department of Parks and Recreation – Adapted Programming is committed to providing a continuum of programs and activities for all.  Programs are conducted at multiple locations across the county and are specifically designed for individuals with disabilities.  These positions require 6 months of experience working with/teaching individuals with disabilities.  The minimum age requirement for these positions is 18 years old.
 
Available Instructor Positions:

Adapted General Programs Instructor: 
Adapted programs are developed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities in a structured environment with lower staff to participant ratios.  We are currently seeking highly motivated individuals to join our team and lead adaptive programs for children and adults with disabilities.  
An ideal candidate should:
  • Have experience working with children and adults with disabilities in a variety of settings.
  • Demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and caring for the program and its participants.   
  • Have experience leading groups and activities for children and adults with disabilities.
  • Have knowledge of special needs.
  • Be able to provide a structured play environment that meets the needs of all participants.
  • Be able to problem solve and work independently.
  • Have good communication skills.
Adapted program offerings vary based on time and location. Program focus varies and includes but is not limited to arts and crafts, dance, sports, fitness, golf, outdoor activities, etc. Students currently enrolled or graduated from Therapeutic Recreation programs preferred. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist preferred.
 
Adapted Swim/Aquatics Instructor: 
This position is responsible for instructing individuals with disabilities on water safety, basic and advanced swimming skills in a one-on-one or small group setting. Incumbent is expected to work approximately 3-15 hours per week. A minimum of 6-months prior experience with adapting lessons for individuals with special needs is required. Applicants must hold a current Water Safety Instructor and CPR/First Aid Certification.
 

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism conducts DMV records checks on all licensed employees and criminal background checks on all hires age 18 years and older. Fingerprinting may be required.

Starting Rate of Pay: $16.25

NATURE OF WORK                                                                                                        

This class is part of the Recreation Job Family. Incumbents perform routine work in connection with various recreation programs or activities. Instructors in this classification teach beginner and intermediate specialty level classes. Example: beginner/intermediate ballet, tap, jazz, safety, CPR, first aid, mini camps, environmental education and parent/child classes. May provide daily upkeep and light maintenance of equipment and facility.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics

This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable code of conduct rules; providing customer services. Work is performed in accordance with set procedures and guidelines, and deviation from those guidelines require approval.


TYPICAL CLASS RESPONSIBILITIES (These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

1. Carrying out program plans, activities, and lessons. Sets up equipment or materials needed for a class and cleans up after program.

2. Provides excellence in customer service by answering questions and providing information to the public.

3. Maintains and prepares equipment and facility and maintains related records.

4. Enforces program and facility rules; provides emergency care and treatment as required.

5. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

KNOWLEDGE

Requires special training in specified activity;

Requires knowledge and experience in specified activity;

Basic exercise science principles and theories;

Recordkeeping principles;

Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations;

Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment;

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

8th grade education and 0-12 months of related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

Must be at least 16 years old; May require Federal or State background check.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS                                                                                          

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

 Medium Work: May require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, and intense noises.
