ABOUT THIS ROLE:

The Deputy Director of the Prince William County Department of Social Services (PWC DSS) will play a vital role in overseeing two divisions of programs mandated by the Virginia Department of Social Services. This position requires an in-depth understanding of all PWC DSS initiatives, including the Homeless Services and Financial Services Divisions, as well as administrative functions and emergency management. We seek a candidate with a comprehensive background in personnel management, program budgeting, and financial management, along with experience related to homeless and juvenile pre-trial programs, as well as emergency management.

Furthermore, the Deputy Director will be prepared to serve as the Designated Director in the absence of the Director and will represent PWC DSS in various forums and discussions.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in social work, behavioral science, counseling, business or public administration or related field.  

PREFERENCES: 
The successful candidate will have at least seven years of professional experience with the Virginia Department of Social Services and the Office of Children's Services accompanied with Master's degree in social work. The ideal candidate will also have professional experience in the following program areas.

  • Homeless Services
  • Emergency Management
  • Benefit programs such as Medicaid/SNAP/TANF
  • VIEW/Child Care/customer service operations
  • Protective services such as CPS/APS/Intake/Prevention
  • Foster care/On-going CPS/Permanency
  • Children's Services Act operations
  • Strategic Planning
  • Budget Development
  • Personnel Management

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: 

Monday - Friday, 08:30 a.m. - 05:00 p.m. This is an exempt position that may involve attending routine evening meetings and being accessible during weekends and evenings, particularly in the event of public emergencies.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

All DSS staff are required to provide emergency human services work, including staffing emergency shelters in the event of a community disaster. Candidates must pass criminal history, child protective services, and DMV background checks. The Prince William Department of Social Services may not employ resource/foster parents for youth in the Prince William foster-care program. Resource/foster parents for youth from other localities are welcome to apply.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Capable of delivering public speeches effectively in English with confidence and poise.
  • Possesses the capability to comprehensively read and interpret written materials in English that pertain to legislative matters, program developments, financial considerations, as well as rules and regulations.
  • Must be able to draft and refine content while ensuring clarity in grammar and adherence.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of staff, the public, individual customers, and elected officials. 
  • Possess the ability to drive and provide personal transportation, with mileage expenses eligible for reimbursement.
  • Occasional travel overnight.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $128,680.50 to $167,280.75/yr.
