If you have a passion for working with at-risk youth, then consider a position as a Detention Specialist with the Prince William County Office of Youth Services. Our Detention Specialists are the front-line staff working in the Molinari Juvenile Shelter which is a short-term residential program for boys and girls ages 10 to 17 who are in crisis and need temporary placement. This program affords a structured environment where residents can begin to address their problems. 

This position is assigned to the female dorm, housing girls ages 10-17. Therefore, for this role we are seeking qualified female applicants. Male applicants are welcome to apply for future vacancies assigned to the male dorm,

Hiring Bonus - this position qualifies for a one-time cash signing bonus of $5,000.00! This bonus will be paid in two installments and is subject to all applicable tax withholding and reporting requirements. The first installment ($2,500.00) is payable after ninety (90) days of employment are completed. The second ($2,500.00) installment will be payable on the pay date following the completion of your one (1) year probation period. 

ABOUT THIS ROLE: 

In this role, you will supervise the security and welfare of youth during their daily activities that include: school, recreation, meals, hygiene, life skills groups, and meetings with attorneys, court-services staff and other professionals. Most importantly, you will set an example for how to make positive choices and manage difficult situations through your own actions. It’s a tough job, but if you choose, you can be an important influence in the lives of youth.    

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the security and welfare of the juveniles in your care;
  • Organizing and supervising recreational, educational and life skills programs; 
  • Conducting group activities on topics such as problem solving, anger management and decision making; 
  • Responding to disorderly youth and, when necessary;
  • Facilitating video conferencing for resident appointments. 

The ideal candidate will have experience working with at-risk youth, preferably in secure or non- secure residential facilities; the ability to work independently and make decisions based on established policy and procedure; a commitment to modeling positive decision-making skills and guiding youth to making better choices; the ability to perform physical restraints when necessary, using the “Handle with Care” techniques; and the ability to utilize basic monitoring equipment such as video cameras and radios.


MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

High school diploma or G.E.D. and 1 year of experience working with children or teenage groups.  

PREFERENCES:

  • Bachelor’s degree with courses in human behavioral science OR two (2) years of experience with children or teenage groups and academic credits. 
  • Experience working with at-risk youth
  • Experience working in law enforcement or security
  • Experience teaching life skills, problem solving, anger management and decision-making
  • Experience using physical restraint techniques such as "Handle with Care"
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: 

As needed for coverage, you will be scheduled in 12-hour shifts: Day 7am-7pm and/or Night 7pm-7am 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have a valid driver's license 
  • In accordance with Department of Juvenile Justice regulations, the selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical and background checks prior to receiving a final offer. 
  • All DSS staff members are required to provide emergency human services work in the event of an emergency disaster.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $23.25 - $34.19/hr.
