What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Owner Governance and Risk Specialist position at Principal Financial Group?
The Principal Financial Group is seeking a Governance Professional to provide comprehensive analysis and guidance on complex compliance issues. This individual will partner with the business unit to be responsible for the governance and compliance of operational and underwriting administration processes. Additionally, the role serves as a liaison with Compliance and Legal departments to achieve efficient, timely, and cost-effective oversight and operational support, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws.
- Perform evaluations of processes and workflows, collaborating with business units, Compliance, Legal, and Risk departments to identify the most significant risks and compliance deficiencies. Analyze and interpret sophisticated requirements, industry standards, and policies to ensure operational practices are in alignment. Propose creative solutions to address both internal and external customer needs. Manage and resolve sensitive escalated issues.
- Develop and implement strategies to address risks and ensure regulatory compliance. Work closely with Compliance, Legal, and Risk departments to build and implement robust controls and procedures that effectively close identified compliance gaps. Continuously assess the efficacy of compliance measures, proposing improvements where vital. Build and supervise key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to quantify and evaluate the success of operational risk management initiatives.
- Advocate for business unit interests during sophisticated internal and external reviews, including market conduct examinations, audits, and government inquiries. Collaborate effectively with senior internal and external Legal Counsel, Compliance teams, and other internal and external auditors, examiners, and service providers.
- Develop and present comprehensive remediation strategies and plans to senior management as needed.
- Develop, review, and update sophisticated operational policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure regulatory compliance. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize processes, reduce redundancies, and improve compliance efficiency. Effectively communicate policy and procedural changes to relevant partners, providing vital training to support implementation. Facilitate monthly governance meetings with the business units to assure visibility and accountability toward the identified governance items.
- Orchestrate and/or contribute to high-priority strategic initiatives that are essential for driving growth in both the business unit and the overall corporation.

- Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years of related business experience or equivalent; requires expert and broad legal and technical knowledge of laws & regulations, and contract provisions

- In-depth knowledge of policy/product administration, contract language and provisions, processes and practices, customer service delivery strategies, internal/external auditing, market conduct/examination processes, and business, compliance and legal risk.
- Demonstrates strong technical leadership skills, sound business ethics and outstanding decision making, issue identification and resolution
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal, written and strong presentation skills
- High level of creativity and advanced analytical skills
- Ability to work with complex, ambiguous information
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$95200 - $182400 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
