ATHLETIC AND ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR

SUMMARY: This position works closely with students, parents, administrators and the community to provide primary leadership and ensure safety in the school’s athletic and activities programs. The AD will create a culture where sports is an extension of the classroom emphasizing life lessons, character development and overall student growth alongside athletic skills. The AD will promote and market involvement in student activities and athletics and will coordinate overall District programs in conjunction with middle school athletic coordinators. In addition, this position is responsible for connecting school athletic programs and community programs. This position’s responsibilities are to coordinate the district athletic programs for grades 7 through 12 and be an active member in the Wenatchee High School administrative team. The Athletic and Activities Director is responsible for the coordination of athletic events with other school districts and to be an advocate for athletics with district staff, outside agencies, and the community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Create and maintain an educational based athletic program. Responsible for directing and coordinating all athletic events and contacts in concert with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), as well as league affiliations. Includes directing and coordinating the use of district athletic facilities. Includes the directing and coordinating of transportation for all sports activities in the secondary schools and monitoring costs. Coordinates the building athletic calendar. Work with school activity programs in providing scheduling assistance. Responsible for billing all indoor athletic facility use. Represents the district at league, district, and state meetings. Direct the day-to-day operations of the total district athletic program, including sports, sports medicine, cheerleadership, and dance/drill. Supervises after-school activities, athletic events and pool user groups. Observe and direct coaches at practices and contests. Counsels coaches to promote positive and professional behavior, implementing improvement plans when necessary. Work with Middle School Athletic Coordinators to ensure consistency in programming, training and WIAA compliance. Coordinates activities at WHS, develops and monitors the ASB athletic budget and recommended expenses. Implements all WIAA regulations, directly tracks and monitors eligibility of all participating athletes and represents the school at WIAA athletic eligibility hearings, as necessary. Interprets school, District, WIAA and NCAA policies and rules for students, parents, and coaches. Supervises WIAA coaches certification and provides periodic reports to WIAA in conjunction with other high school Athletic Directors. Monitors and tracks all coaches under his/her direct supervision ensuring current WIAA certification. Participates in recruitment, screening, and interviews for all coaches, activity advisors, and other employees for the athletics and activity programs. Makes recommendations for hire to WHS building principal. Provide coaching staff with opportunities to improve skills related to their coaching needs and meeting the expectations of the Athletic Code of Conduct. Includes coaching, motivating, guiding, training, and assisting coaches. Schedule and conduct district coaches’ meetings, as well as attend building level coaches’ meetings periodically. Responsible for developing and administering a statement of athletics policy, objectives, regulations, and procedures that support board policy and district objectives. Includes the implementation and monitoring of a long-range plan for athletics. Submits an annual report as required by board policy and follows all Civil Rights policy for Title IX. Evaluates present programs, facilities and makes recommendations where necessary; monitors boys and girls programs to assure there is no discrimination on the basis of gender in violation of Title IX. Assess needs and recommend budgets designed to implement long-range athletic plans and goals. Coordinate with Booster Club for athletic events. Maintain records for all district athletic equipment and facilities. Includes the monitoring of accurate accounts of physical examination, parent consent, insurance, and eligibility requirements. Assist with disciplinary decisions regarding district athletics. Work with the district to provide medical service at district home athletic events, especially high school football. Includes developing and coordinating appropriate trainer, sports safety, and injury treatment programs. Assist building administrators in the development of a sales program package including activity tickets, user fees, season tickets, family tickets, and supervisory passes. Responsible for District Athletic communications to include website, newsletter and other social media outlets.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Have working knowledge of WIAA rules and regulations. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: WA State Administrative Credential Required. Bachelor’s degree in education, physical education, or closely related field required. Five (5) or more years of successful head coaching experience required, previous athletic administration or building level administrative experience is preferred. A combination of experience and education may be considered. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises two non-supervisory employees and approximately 70 high school coaches. Directly supervises and evaluates certificated staff within activities, athletics, and appropriate content areas. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

CONTRACT PROVISIONS: The successful candidate will be offered a continuing contract in accordance with the district-established Principals/ School Based Directors salary schedule.
