Job Purpose

This position requires providing Subject Matter Expertise to Technical Writers in the locomotive division and performing some Technical Writing duties. Additionally, it involves conducting Technical Training Classes at various Progress Rail locations and on customer property.


Key Job Elements

  • Provide Electrical, Mechanical, and Locomotive Familiarization training to internal and external customers;
  • Training will be on EMD Equipment, including familiarization, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of EMD locomotives;
  • Ensure course content is current, accurate, and aligned with FRA and company rules and regulations;
  • Work involves considerable creativity, perception, and initiative with wide latitude for independent action;
  • Review and Edit Technical Publications;
  • Request photos, graphics, and diagrams as necessary;
  • Develop recommendations for service procedures;
  • Provide comprehensive instruction of the Progress Rail Locomotive Electrical System and demonstrate expertise in the subject while sharing it with enthusiasm;
  • Provide technical advice to customers regarding proper maintenance practices and operation of products to maximize reliability and performance;
  • Lead classes in instruction, testing, and troubleshooting on topics including all facets of AC Electrical systems, including Truck Control and IAC units;
  • Lead classes in instruction, testing, and troubleshooting on topics including all facets of the Tier 4 1010J Engine;
  • Structure training material and presentations into a logical sequence;
  • Develop new technical courses, update and revise existing course content while developing instructional videos to complement and support training needs;
  • Evaluate customer satisfaction responses and recommend improvements to course content;
  • Perform administrative duties associated with development of course materials and delivery and reporting on instruction;

Education / Training

High School diploma or equivalent required;

College degree with a major in engineering or equivalent electrical or mechanical training.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Product knowledge along with mechanical and electrical aptitude;
  • High level of oral and technical writing skills;
  • Relatively high level of analytical ability where problems are complex;
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others;
  • 10 years hands-on experience maintaining locomotive systems, preferred;
  • Knowledge of Airbrake systems and older DC Electrical systems is a plus;
  • Experience developing training materials, assessing needs of customers;
  • Electrical and mechanical aptitude to understand locomotive and mechanical and electrical systems and technical operation;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication, and conflict management skills;
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills;
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office suite).

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

  • Strength – Ability to travel without restrictions. Minimal lifting requirement. Frequent sitting. Occasional standing, walking;
  • Motion – Employee will be moving during travel and sitting when in the office;
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Constant communications, including both talking and hearing;
  • Work Environment – Employee will be traveling as required, which will expose them to different outdoor conditions (customer jobsites and/or offices). The balance of the time, they will be working in an office setting;
  • Emotional Demands – Ability to lead and communicate with customers and team members. Ability to work with a team to accomplish the mission;
  • Safety – Position is primarily limited to general office safety requirements. Position requires regular travel. The employee will occasionally be at construction sites, which may require use of PPE.

Summary

The salary range for this position is $77,069.75 - $139,668.00. Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance, and experience.
