Job Summary:
The ideal Assistant Executive Director candidate is passionate about serving the community and affordable housing. In this role, the Assistant Executive Director will take on the responsibilities of a lead strategist, planner, and manager for the internal administrative operations and strategic initiatives of Project Houseworks. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this person is responsible for developing organizational policies, projects, priorities, deadlines, and work standards that direct the pursuit of Project Houseworks’ mission while effectively addressing any conflicts that may arise.
Responsibilities:
The Assistant Executive Director plays a crucial role in fostering organizational leadership and sustainability. Working alongside the Executive Director and the Leadership Team, they will undertake various essential responsibilities shaping the future of Project Houseworks.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Leadership Team to identify and implement an organizational strategic plan and objectives to fulfill Project Houseworks’ mission.
- Establish and nurture relationships, partnerships, and cooperative arrangements with community groups, affordable housing agencies, social services, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders to advance Project Houseworks’ mission.
- Represent the programs and perspectives of Project Houseworks with integrity while enhancing the organization’s profile within the metropolitan community and beyond.
- Identify, recruit, train, and develop a talented team of employees who can lead critical departments and manage strategic organizational functions.
- Encourage staff development and education and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the organization's overall program.
- Ensure that sound human resource practices are in place and that appropriate provisions are made for the succession of management team members.
- Develop a culture of transparency and collaboration throughout the organization.
- Ensure job descriptions are developed, regular performance evaluations are held, and sound human resource practices are in place.
- Receive and review, in concert with the Executive Director, all financial reports and statements the Director of Finance presents.
- In conjunction with the Program Manager, evaluate programs to ensure goals are being met and identify avenues for growth and improvement.
- Participate in grant planning and reporting process.
- Participate in developing annual operating, program, and grant budgets.
- Monitor operations, employees, and programming in conjunction with the executive director to ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
- Represent the organization at social and community events to strengthen the brand and effectively communicate Project Houseworks’ message.
- Prepare and deliver reports to the board, funders, and community supporters.
The responsibilities outlined above do not encompass all duties or tasks that the Assistant Executive Director may be required to complete. The employee is also expected to perform any job-related tasks assigned by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Education and Qualifications:
- Five to seven years of experience in a nonprofit leadership role, demonstrating a track record of collaboration with the Board of Directors, service providers, staff, community partners, and stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in nonprofit administration or other related field preferred.
- Experience or knowledge in affordable housing, community development, and/or social services is preferred but not required.
- Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
- Demonstrates experience in managing organizational operations.
- Proven ability to develop and implement programs effectively.
- Demonstrates flexibility and a willingness to lead new initiatives at strategic and tactical levels.
- Proven track record as an implementer who thrives on managing multiple key initiatives concurrently.
- Knowledge of grant management, including the processes for reporting and ensuring compliance.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, growing organization.
- Strong verbal communication skills and ability to understand and adapt communication approaches, messages, and language with diverse audiences.
- Strong writing and editing skills and ability to synthesize complex information and present it to diverse audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build capacity to build rapport with the Leadership Team, staff, Board of Directors, and community partners.
- A self-directed leader focused on mentoring, delegating, and teaching to enhance the knowledge and skills of others.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software. Technological ability to utilize other software as needed for organization operations and management
