Job Description:
The shelter manager will work evenings and weekends at our low barrier, LGBTQ homeless shelter, The Rainbow House. The individual will need to independently manage a shelter environment with 24 high acuity clients during their hours at The Rainbow House. The primary responsibilities of this position include planning and facilitating evening activities such as meals, life skills workshops, crafts, support groups, movie nights, and more, cleaning and organizing the shelter, ensuring all necessary supplies are ordered and stocked, providing emotional support to guests, de-escalating crises, and assisting with case management actives such as connecting guests with employment, scheduling medical appointments, and applying for benefits.
As a Project Rainbow staff member, you will work with vulnerable LGBTQ and other unhoused individuals with a range of mental health issues, substance use disorders, medical needs, trauma histories, and criminal backgrounds and will be expected to do so with kindness and patience. This position will require high level crisis management and de-escalation skills, as you will work daily with individuals experiencing mental health crises including psychosis.
This is an exempt position that pays $45,000 per year and is benefits eligible. The individual filling this position will work 3pm-12am 4 days a week and one 8am-8pm shift on the weekend. Total, they will work 5 days a week. Schedule may vary based upon coverage needs at the shelter.
Qualifications:
Applicant should have an understanding in all areas related to homelessness, substance abuse and mental health. Ideally, candidates will have prior experience working with these populations in housing and/or harm reduction settings.
Successful candidate will be able to prioritize tasks and manage a complex array of needs while working independently and communicating with a diverse population in a professional demeanor.
Prior experience with data entry and grant reporting is a plus but not required. At minimum, applicants must be proficient with computers.
Must have good problem-solving skills, communication, and conflict resolution skills, with experience in crisis management and de-escalation.
Applicant will need an understanding of community resources and the ability to navigate complex eligibility requirements for community resources.
Ideal applicant will have experience with or knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques, harm reduction, trauma informed care, low-barrier service provision, and person-centered planning.
Candidate should have reliable transportation and must be willing to travel to and from The Rainbow House.
Degrees and professional certifications, case management experience, public health backgrounds, and lived experience with homelessness, substance use, navigating HIV prevention and treatment, and other life experiences common to the people we serve are all preferred, but not required.
