Our Mission:The Next Black Educator Workforce (NBEW) is committed to building a sustainable pipeline of highly qualified Black educators who will lead, teach, and mentor in racially isolated communities, while amplifying Black voices, perspectives, and leadership across classrooms in California and beyond.

Through this program, delivered in collaboration with the University of the Pacific, participants will work as teacher assistants or paraprofessionals in partnering schools, gaining practical classroom experience while earning a Master of Arts in Education and a Single Subject Teaching Credential. Participants will engage in a combination of online coursework and in-person residencies designed to support their growth as educators. Teacher Residency Program Summary:

The Next Black Educator Workforce (NBEW) Teacher Residency program is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing systemic barriers in education by increasing the representation of Black educators in classrooms. This program offers a unique combination of hands-on teaching experience, mentorship, and culturally responsive professional development to prepare aspiring educators for successful teaching careers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work as a teacher assistant or paraprofessional in a partnering school to gain hands-on teaching experience.
  • Partner with a mentor teacher to co-plan and deliver engaging, inclusive lessons.
  • Gradually assume teaching responsibilities, including lesson delivery, classroom management, and student assessments.
  • Implement strategies that support diverse learners and foster a positive, equitable classroom environment.
  • Enroll in and complete coursework at the University of the Pacific to earn a Master of Arts in Education and a Single Subject Teaching Credential.
  • Attend professional development workshops and residencies designed to support effective teaching practices.
  • Maintain progress toward program milestones in both credentialing and graduate studies.
  • Build strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues to foster trust and collaboration.
  • Contribute to NBEW program development by providing feedback on participant experiences and outcomes.
  • Serve as a role model for Black leadership excellence in education, inspiring students and peers alike.
  • Join a vibrant alumni network for continued mentorship, professional development, and career advancement opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (required).

  • Dedication to the NBEW mission of empowering Black educators to lead and inspire.

Application requirements include:

  • An updated resume highlighting your education and relevant experience.
  • Unofficial college transcripts for NBEW application and official transcripts for the University of Pacific.
  • 2 Written Responses detailing your passion for education and equity. (200 words minimum each)
  • Additionally, 1-3 letters of recommendation will be required for submission with the University of Pacific.
