Job Description
Follow instructions given by asphalt foreman while performing a wide variety of manual tasks including luting/raking, leveling, shoveling, sweeping, raking asphalt to grade, and operating commercial paving equipment.
The lute man’s job description is to work the edges and top of the mat. He’s the artist on the job who will directly affect mat quality and appearance.
The lute man’s responsibilities are to level off the mat and prepare edges and joints for compaction. He will gently guide and direct material while it is still at its hottest temperature to create firm vertical edges. He will call for material and work it into any low spots, leveling off the top so a consistent, level surface is presented to the roller operator for compaction.
The lute man reports to the foreman.
Skills and Qualifications:
Education/Experience
- Outdoor labor work experience in extreme heat and cold is required.
- Experience loading and securing equipment on trailers.
- Experience driving commercial trucks with trailers.
- 1-4 years of asphalt luting/raking experience.
Requirements
- Driver’s license in good standing is required.
- Ability to see and correct defects in surfaces being installed.
- Ability to comprehend, retain and give instructions.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Successful completion of pre-employment MVR, physical, background and drug screen.
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary.
- Technology Use: Google Maps, App-Based Timesheets
- Ability to lift/carry on a regular basis at least 50-90lbs personally.
- Ability to bend, crouch, stoop, and use hand tools.
- Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities on the job site including equipment, co-workers, and other traffic.
- Constant physical effort including lifting, standing, shoveling, or walking for at least eight hours per day without fatiguing.
- Ability to exert one’s self physically over long periods of time without getting winded or out of breath.
Job Duties
- Place hot mix asphalt using a shovel, lute or other related tools.
- Shoveling asphalt materials and assisting with maintenance of equipment.
- Operate commercial paving equipment such as bobcats with various attachments (millers, brooms, jack hammer, etc.), sweepers, rollers, and other equipment.
- Safely drive pickup and trailers to and from job sites.
- Prepare parking lots, driveways, and roads to be paved and Sealcoater. This includes cleaning, sweeping, blowing, using a sledge hammer, pick, or other hand tools as needed, and assisting with and operating equipment such as bobcats and mini excavators to prepare patch work.
- Follow instruction of managers to perform miscellaneous tasks as required.
- Assist in sealcoating tasks as required to include: hand squeegee applied sealant, cleaning cracks, sweeping and blowing parking lots, and filling cracks.
- Participation in ensuring that work meets contract specifications.
- Efficiently perform all miscellaneous tasks required.
