SUMMARY:
Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of all people in the facility, guests and staff members alike. Lifeguards ensure safety by enforcing and obeying all facility rules, by aggressively engaging in preventative guarding, by practicing their skills, and preparing their bodies and minds to successfully address any incident, accident, or emergency that may arise.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Lifeguard reports to the Pool Manager for daily assignments and to the Recreation Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Lifeguard will not directly supervise any employees.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prevent accidents through the enforcement of Prospect Heights Park District policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the swimming facilities.
- Be attentive, when on duty, for possible incidents or accidents that may occur in the water or on the deck.
- Maintain order in the pool and take necessary action to prevent possible trouble or injury.
- Know, enforce, and follow all pool rules and policies. Be consistent and polite in your enforcement with patrons.
- Report observed or potential physical hazards and unsafe conditions at the pool to the pool manager on duty.
- Maintain an acceptable appearance through personal hygiene, clean uniforms, etc.
- Thoroughly complete all incident, accident and rescue reports.
- Provide first aid to guests and staff members, complete first aid log, and report any supply shortages to the pool manager on duty.
- Attend and participate in four hours per month of REQUIRED in-service training (12 hours for the 10-week season) and all staff meetings as scheduled.
- Learn and follow all provisions of the Aquatic Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Perform other related pool duties as required by the Pool Manager or Recreation Supervisor.
ESSENTIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
- Able to communicate tactfully and effectively with program participants and co-workers
- Must be able to swim continuously for 100 meters with and without rescue tube
- Must be able to complete a 2-minute tread using legs only
- Must be able to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 5 ft deep
- Must be able to exit the pool without requiring the use of a ladder
- Must be able to complete & pass lifeguarding, CPR/AED, first aid, and oxygen administration certification, including written exams and practical skills
- Must be able to climb up and down ladder on lifeguard stand
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Set up of pool furniture and supplies as needed.
- Participate in pool activities as needed.
- Assist with special pool events that are held during break time on specific days.
- Assist with swim meets.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- The Lifeguard has the responsibility for the safety of the general public in the pool and on the pool deck.
- The Lifeguard may have to work under stressful situations when first aid or CPR is required.
- The Lifeguard has to be able to make quick decisions to assure safety in the pool.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
- The Lifeguard works outdoors in a summer climate.
- The Lifeguard must be able to respond quickly and accurately.
- The Lifeguard may need to sit, stand, squat, kneel, or walk for long periods of time.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The Lifeguard will be exposed to the weather conditions, which can include cold, rain, wind, and extreme heat.
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS:
- The Lifeguard must be able to follow directions from the supervisor.
- The Lifeguard must be able to give and receive directions from co-workers.
- The Lifeguard must use good safety awareness and judgment.
- The Lifeguard must be aware of potential life-threatening conditions.
PAY RATES:
Starting at $16.00/hr

Qualifications
