What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sailing Instructor position at Prouts Neck Yacht Club?
Prouts Neck Yacht Club is seeking an enthusiastic, talented head instructor for the 2025 summer season. This charming 100-year-old yacht club is perched over the water and has a wonderful vibe. PNYC also provides free housing (and bicycle) in a fully renovated and furnished apartment surrounded by a lovely setting only a short one mile bike ride to the yacht club. Work commitment is 10-11 weeks from June 9th to August 25th with flexibility in start and end times.
PNYC offers a variety of classes for youth and adults in Optis, Prams, 420’s, Quests, and Sonars. Class experience ranges from beginner to racing and ages 6 to 16 years. The club fleet consists of 8 Optis, 16 Prams, 6 420’s, 2 Quests, and 2 Sonars, which are part of a 10-boat Sonar fleet. There are 4 instructor boats (RIB’s and similar) with all the boats of recent vintage and good/excellent condition. The Sonar fleet races twice weekly with all children and adults being encouraged to participate in these exciting races.
About the Community. Prouts Neck is a small coastal community with a rich history of sailing and racing, It is comprised of a lovely headland with 200 houses, all within walking or biking distance of the Club. There is a strong sense of community with generations of returning families. The yacht club is situated at the edge of an open bay, offering direct access to an unparalleled sailing venue with steady prevailing breezes and deep water. There are roughly 80 sail and power boats in the harbor, plus the yacht club seamanship boats, Prouts Neck is also located within a 20-minute drive of vibrant Portland, Maine and surrounded by many outdoor activities and history!
Head instructor is responsible for the overall management of the program, working closely with the Manager and waterfront personnel. This person is the program’s role model. There will be 3 other instructors reporting to this position, plus assistants as needed. There is a reasonable and appropriate student-teacher ratio and a warm teaching environment. Other responsibilities include parent communication and development of curriculums. The Head instructor will also coordinate a classes on their own with the help of assistant instructors as needed. Job Requirements:
- US Sailing Level 1 certification or higher
- SafeSport Certification
- Maine Boaters License or equivalent
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Excellent communication and a positive attitude is a must
- Staff are expected to promote a positive environment, advocate for proper seamanship with safety measures, and adhere to club policies and guidelines.
