Organizational Overview

Providence Animal Center (PAC) is located on a 7-acre campus in Media, PA, with a satellite location in Radnor, PA, home to Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals on a 13-acre property. PAC oversees a national mobile spay / neuter program called Fido Fixers and provides high-quality services to over 22,000 animals annually through various initiatives, including adoptions, a low-cost Wellness Clinic, and a Medical Surgery Suite, along with free or low-cost clinics throughout Delaware County and the City of Philadelphia. The center successfully completed a $4.3 million capital campaign to rebuild its Media campus and raises approximately $2.5 million each year as a fully privately funded organization. With a dedicated team of about 85 staff members, interns, and residents, PAC maintains a strong partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Vet School, serving as a training site with faculty from Penn. This commitment to animal welfare and community service underscores PAC's vital role in promoting responsible pet ownership and improving the lives of animals in the region.

Summary of Responsibilities

The Major Gift Officer focuses on the cultivation and solicitation of individuals who have the greatest capacity for supporting Providence Animal Centers and Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals’ programs. The Major Gift Officer relates to donors who require the most deftly carried-out cultivation, leading to the solicitation of major outright and planned gifts. The Major Gift Officer coordinates the involvement of advancement leadership and staff, program staff, and volunteers in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual donors.

Accountability

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer / Interim Chief Advancement Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Raise funds for all work of the organizations through the carefully planned cultivation and solicitation of individuals who have the means to make large ($5,000 ) outright, blended, or planned gifts.
  • Utilizing prospect research and through discussions with donors, staff, and board members, qualify prospects’ capacity to make major / planned gifts.
  • Increase current donors’ or prospects’ interest in and financial commitment to the organizations through visits, calls, letters, and donor engagement activities. Interpret the work of the organizations in articulate, compelling, and creative ways.

o   The Major Gift Officer should have an active portfolio of 50-75 donors and prospects.

o   The Major Gift Officer is expected to make 25-30 in-person solicitations per year.

  • Participate in regular donor strategy sessions. Considering the complex financial situations and organizational relationships of many of the organizations’ most sophisticated donors, develop effective cultivation plans and introduce compelling gift options.
  • Involve program and senior administrative staff and board members in the cultivation and solicitation of major / planned gift prospects. Provide coaching and support as needed.
  • Staff the Chief Executive Officer in engaging and soliciting key prospects. Participate in developing individual donor engagement and solicitation strategies, provide logistical and scheduling support, and ensure that the CEO is prepared for each individual donor engagement.
  • Personally, acknowledge gifts from assigned donors and coordinate individualized stewardship plans including additional acknowledgments.
  • Maintain donor records in DonorPerfect, including gift opportunities, notes of cultivation and solicitation actions, and donor’s personal information of relevance to the organizations.
  • Keep informed about the total program work of the organizations through contacts with program staff, attendance at events, site visits, and reading materials.
  • Consult as necessary with fundraising colleagues, participate in conference calls, and attend gatherings of all fundraisers when scheduled.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education / training.
  • Five or more years of direct fundraising experience, including three or more years of experience in major / planned gift fundraising with individual donors, is required.
  • A passion for the organization’s missions and a strong desire to forge lasting relationships that support those missions.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and persuasively both orally and in writing. Ease in initiating contact with persons not known, in person and by phone / email. Demonstrated ability to interpret effectively the programs and goals of an organization to a wide range of persons of different backgrounds. Convey credibility and expertise in advising donors on confidential and sometimes complex philanthropic planning matters.
  • Experience that demonstrates the ability to organize time well, to give attention to detail, and to carry out careful planning and follow-up. Demonstrated ability to use imagination and innovation within financial, physical, time, or other limitations.
  • Ability to sustain workloads over extended periods during emergencies, special campaigns, holiday seasons, and other situations.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a multi-layered team environment, establish objectives, determine priorities, set performance standards, and establish a successful team approach to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Evidence of ability to exercise judgment consistent with and supportive of the organization’s goals as well as demonstrated initiative, perseverance, and ability to cope with pressure.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with volunteers and staff, and in an organization that is characterized by a high level of consultation.
  • Computer literacy required. Familiarity with DonorPerfect and Microsoft Office is desirable.

  • This job operates in a professional environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
  • Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of telephone and email for communication with donors, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Occasionally lift and carry items up to 25 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license, as the position involves traveling to donor meetings, events, and community outreach activities.
