Description
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) assists physicians and/or nurse practitioners by performing clinical and administrative duties directed by the Practice Manager and/or healthcare provider.
Duties and Responsibilities
Field
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs, confirming purpose of visit or treatment.
- Supports patient care delivery by helping health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; disposing of contaminated supplies.
- Organizes and maintains patient charts, including generating chart numbers, filing, and pulling charts.
- Answers telephone and either responds to inquiry, directs caller to appropriate personnel, or initiates a response by medical personnel.
- Participates in on-call rotation system.
Office
- Schedules appointments and enters appointment date and time into computerized scheduler.
- Conducts reminder calls to all patients.
- Call in authorized drug refills as directed and telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies.
- Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
- Helps providers generate revenue by recording billing information of services rendered; completing insurance forms; responding to insurance and other third-party inquiries.
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
- Assist Provider by tracking supply inventory and ordering when necessary.
- Organizes and maintains patient charts, including generating chart numbers, filing, and pulling charts.
Safety and Sanitation
- Be familiar with facility policy and procedure manuals to identify safety precautions and equipment to use when performing tasks that could result in bodily injury.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.
- Uses personal protective equipment when performing procedures that involve exposure to blood or body fluids.
- Follows established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.
- Follows established departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress codes.
- Reports hazardous conditions or equipment.
Working Conditions
- Works in office area(s), the community, and long-term care facilities.
- Moves intermittently during working hours
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Is involved with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
- Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel, and visitors.
- Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
- Works flexible working hours, sometimes beyond normal working hours when necessary.
- Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
- Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB, AIDS, and Hepatitis B viruses
- May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
- Maintains a liaison with the patient, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the patients’ needs.
Qualifications
- Must possess a current, unencumbered active Medical Assistant Certification in South Carolina.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, physicians, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
- Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
- Must have patience, tact as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
- Must be able to relate information concerning a patient’s condition.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
