Freedom School at Providence Baptist Church
Executive Director Position
PE&CS Freedom School Background
Providence Educational and Community Services, Inc. (PE&CS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that sponsors a Freedom School program based on the nationally recognized CDF Freedom Schools model. PE&CS has participated in this program for the past five years. The Freedom School model focuses on educating and nurturing lifelong learning for children and their families.
Freedom School is a six-week, full day, summer literacy and enrichment program that provides children with high expectations and experiences to empower and motivate them to make a difference in themselves and the world around them. Quality literacy instruction and culturally relevant reading materials help to increase achievement and decrease summer learning loss while igniting a passion for reading and a love for learning. Freedom Schools provide support for children, called scholars, in communities where access to quality summer academic enrichment is sometimes limited or lacking. The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) partners with faith-based institutions, community organizations, schools, colleges, and universities who sponsor the program. CDF provides the curriculum materials and training for all staff. Sponsors implement and provide the program at no cost to families.
The five essential components of Freedom Schools are: high quality literacy engagement, nutrition, physical and mental health, parent and family involvement, civic engagement and social action, and inter-generational leadership development.
Freedom Schools are staffed primarily by college students and recent college graduates as servant leader interns/classroom facilitators. There is a 1:10 intern-to-scholar ratio. Other staff include a project director and site coordinator. The Executive Director oversees overall program implementation and all staff receive national and local training.
The Executive Director represents PE&CS and serves as the fiduciary, managing director, and primary contact for the CDF Freedom Schools program. The Executive Director must be familiar with the culture and dynamics of the Greensboro community and have strong contacts within the broader Triad area. The Executive Director must be committed to the goals of CDF Freedom Schools Program and able to work collaboratively with all program constituents. The Executive Director must possess strong communication skills and have either experience in, or willingness to develop skills in, fundraising and program oversight and development.
