We are seeking a Principal Engineer/Researcher with a passion for AI modeling optimization and advanced software systems. This role focuses on researching emerging AI technologies and developing innovative AI models to enhance performance, reduce costs, and enable next-generation mobility services. Reporting to the General Manager, you will support the department’s mission to design and build cutting-edge AI and data platforms capable of handling millions of vehicles while delivering Mobility as a Service (MaaS). The hourly pay rate is $60.00 - $75.00.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Define research objectives and tasks for AI and data technologies.
- Collaborate with university researchers on cutting-edge AI algorithms and technologies.
- Research and develop AI models (open-source and commercial) for diverse business applications such as battery management, supply chain, marketing, mobility, and customer support (e.g., ChatGPT).
- Innovate and optimize AI technologies to improve computing performance.
- Lead discussions and strategy development for applications using advanced AI and data technologies.
- Explore and develop capabilities in emerging AI domains, including:
- Federated Learning
- Decentralized and Distributed Algorithms
- Create solutions that enhance AI model performance, scalability, cost-efficiency, and security:
- Lower latency and cost
- High availability and redundancy
- Improved observability and reliability
- Advanced encryption and security features
- Conduct PoC and benchmarking for AI models to evaluate performance and costs.
- Establish collaborations with university and industry experts.
- Mentor junior researchers and foster talent within the team.
- Transfer research outcomes to advanced development teams, driving valuable business impact.
- File patents and publish research in prestigious journals and conferences.
- Present research findings and influence leadership at the VP and GVP levels.
- Champion and evangelize AI platforms, generative AI, and create a vision and roadmap for future AI capabilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
- 5 years of hands-on R&D experience, with a proven track record in patents and publications.
- Expertise in end-to-end data services/domains and technologies.
- 3 years of research in AI infrastructure, platform development, or IoT systems.
- Strong familiarity with AI modeling, distributed cloud architecture, and tools for clustering, logging, and monitoring.
- Proficiency in prototyping and programming (Python, SQL/NoSQL, Kafka, Spark).
- 3 years of experience managing research projects, including planning, reporting, and collaboration.
- PoC and benchmarking experience for AI or data infrastructure.
- Interest in AI infrastructure optimization and performance improvement.
- Well-rounded knowledge of advanced AI modeling and distributed cloud systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to respond professionally in various situations.
BONUS:
- Ph.D. in Engineering or related fields with specialization in AI or data science.
- Experience in a corporate lab setting, with a track record of cross-functional collaboration.
- Expertise in IoT, edge computing, and distributed cloud architecture (3 years).
- Experience with PoC prototyping for connected cars and IoT systems.
- Knowledge of cloud data ingestion techniques (e.g., AWS, Kafka, Spark) and embedded systems (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson, Arduino).
- Familiarity with connected car architecture and vehicle compute requirements.
- Programming experience in Python, Rust, and other platforms.
- Broad understanding of computer systems, software engineering, and embedded systems.
- Experience in multicultural, multinational environments.
- May be tasked with lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., if able to do so.
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk/stand for moderate periods of time.
- Must be able to bend at the knees and waist frequently
- Must be able to repetitively use a telephone and a computer mouse and keyboard.
