Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is seeking two KRCC news interns for Summer 2025. This internship has been created for Colorado College students ONLY.
This is not a remote position. This role is expected to work from KRCC in Colorado Springs upon starting.
About the Position:
The KRCC News team is seeking two news interns from Colorado College. The News Interns will support the success of KRCC and Colorado Public Radio by producing relevant and engaging digital and audio stories. These positions will pitch, report, and write news stories for digital and audio platforms. Coverage will include breaking news, dailies and enterprise stories about interesting people and places in Southern Colorado.
Key Learning objectives for this experience include -
- Learning about the many roles and responsibilities of a news production team.
- Working closely with news professionals to develop writing skills and learning how to produce engaging content.
- Getting familiar with news production tools and equipment, including those for voice work.
- Working with news professionals to produce on air and digital content that can be utilized on KRCC and the CPR network which can be added to the student’s portfolio.
- Shadowing reporters and experiencing real-time news reporting in the field.
- Getting exposure to editorial meetings and processes.
About You:
You are developing your skills in journalism, whether through coursework, work at a student paper, freelance projects, internships, or independent efforts. You understand the core ethics and principles of journalism and have a strong interest in working on local news.
You are someone who can take an assigned topic and, with some guidance, think creatively about how to approach it. Curiosity, a drive to uncover unexpected sources of information, and an enjoyment of talking with others are essential. This internship will help you develop confidence in calling and interviewing people, but you should already have solid verbal communication skills. You’re looking forward to strengthening your source building skills and connecting with diverse Southern Colorado people and communities. Writing skills are also a must. While we will develop this further in the internship, you should be able to produce clear, concise, and grammatically correct work. Finally, the ability to be flexible and adapt to sudden changes is key as we respond to breaking news and changing daily or weekly priorities. As such, you’re good at organizing your time to stay on deadline.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must currently be enrolled at Colorado College with a standing of freshman or above
- Knowledge of journalistic tenets and ethics
- Experience in writing news articles (can be at a student or independent level)
- Experience with Google Suite
- Ability to consistently meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people across many areas of interest and across platforms
- Dedication to creating content that reflects and serves a diversity of potential audiences in Southern Colorado through language, images and accessible tools
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Ability to shadow and help assist with the occasional weekend or holiday event.
- Must be 18 years of age or older
Education Equivalency:
- This internship is only open to students enrolled at Colorado College with a standing of freshman or above.
