SUPERVISORY NURSE
FT/REGULAR
GENERAL DEFINITION: The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide supervision and oversight to the Community Health Nursing Program. Promote health within the community by providing nursing care and assisting individuals and groups to adopt health behaviors.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Behavioral Health Director.
SUPERVISRION EXERCISED: Will supervise Community Health Nurse(s).
DUTIES:
Plan and coordinate a full range of community health nurse services.
- Assess needs and sets a plan of action to meet these needs by providing health services to communities, schools, families and individuals.
- Assess the health needs of individuals, families, and the community served. Considers the total family situation, i.e., medical condition, the home, community environment, educational level, income level, sanitary practices and hygiene conditions, psychological adjustment, and resources available.
- Interviews and observes the patient, family members, and others. Observes the environment, studies the medical diagnosis and treatment plan and interpret tests administered. Evaluates pertinent factors related to the patient, family and the community.
- Provides skilled nursing care to individuals and families, including measures designed to present complications and to minimize disabilities, while safeguarding their integrity and recognizing their rights to make their own decisions.
- Teaches and supervises patients and families in techniques of positive health measures, accenting and adjusting to the implications and responsibilities of medical care, diagnosis and treatment.
- Provides services and assists tribal leaders with development of their health programs as a consultant, coordinator and/or training officer for tribal health personnel.
- Participates with the interdisciplinary team in defining policies and developing the total care program for patients.
- Collaborates and coordinates programs with other health resource agencies.
- Provides guidance to ancillary personnel.
- Maintains records and prepares reports in compliance with the Privacy Act and I.H.S. policies and procedures.
- Reviews records, reports and the total community health nursing program for the purpose of quality assurance.
Supervisory responsibility includes general crisis management and resolution of interpersonal problems when they arise.
- Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short-term priorities and prepares schedules for completion of work. Assigns and reviews work daily, weekly or monthly. Develops and evaluates performance standards and ratings.
- Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and the capabilities of employees.
- Gives advice, counsel or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.
- Interviews candidates for positions in the unit, recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignments to such positions.
- Approves/Disapproves leave.
- Hears and resolves complaints from employees, referring group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to a higher-level supervisor or manager.
- Identifies developmental and training needs of employees, provides or arranges for needed developmental and training.
- Finds ways to improve production or increase the quality of the work directed.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, administrators, and other agencies to improve the quality of care being delivered to patients.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDEGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Professional knowledge of community health nursing theories, principles, concepts, and clinical skills in order to provide consultation, advice, direction, and assistance to patients, families, and other health care providers, and to formulate appropriate departmental policies, procedures, and treatment guidelines. Ability to communicate clear and concisely, both written and verbal, to maintain collaboration with management, to efficiently manage community health nursing staff, and to deal effectively with patients, their families, and the community at large. Knowledge of organizational management in a hospital and ambulatory care setting. Knowledge of staff requirements and needs of budgeting and resource management, of privacy issues and information management, and of long-range planning and formulation of a dynamic fluid strategic mission. Knowledge of personnel regulations to be able to select and promote in an equitable manner, to deal correctly with confrontational and disciplinary situations. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Commitment to patient-centered and a team-oriented approach.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with two (2) years of experience in community health nursing.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a New Mexico Driver’s License with no DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is not an essential part of the duties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position involves extensive driving in local community, standing, bending, and walking within schools, clinics, and homes. Lifting, moving or carrying items of no more than 30 pounds is necessary to assist disabled patients in ambulation, to set up equipment in specialty clinics and set up audio visual aids for group sessions in outlying communities. Exposures to outside weather in all seasons are necessary because of required visits to homes, schools, and communities. Travel is often on narrow, wet dry, icy, poorly maintained roads. Exposure to infectious and communicable disease is frequent.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. The position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo and successfully pass a thorough character background check and FBI Fingerprint check.
