What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic - Physical Plant position at Punahou School?
The Physical Plant office supports and maintains 75 acres of campus and nearly 1 million square feet of instructional space. Punahou School is currently seeking a Mechanic whose primary responsibility is keeping school vehicles in excellent operating condition. They must possess the ability/skill to operate maintained vehicles at a proficient level in compliance with Federal, State and City requirements and licensing. Other responsibilities include servicing and repairing other equipment such as: compressors, generators, riding mowers, road/track sweeper, etc. As necessitated and per the direction of the department's Supervisor(s), act in the role as a Driver to support Physical Plant. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
- Keep all school vehicles in excellent running condition; ensuring they are “road-ready” at all times.
- Service, perform preventative maintenance and repairs to include/but not limited to buses (as permitted by DOT), boom truck, rubbish compactor, flatbed, dump truck, sky track, hop toe, forklifts, vans, golf carts, and other school owned vehicles.
- Possess ability to drive a wide range of vehicles like/but not limited to buses, boom truck, rubbish compactor, flatbed, dump truck, sky track, hop toe, forklifts, vans, and other school owned vehicles.
- Solicits, obtains corresponding quotes, and notifies/gets Supervisor approval for all outside servicing/purchasing of vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains a current/detailed inventory list of all school purchased parts, tools and equipment used in the performance of assigned job duties and responsibilities. Ensures Supervisor has access to this list and inventory at all times.
- Responsible for servicing other equipment on campus, to include, but not limited to: school compressors and generators, pumps, compactor, pressure washers, etc.
- Monitors and ensures safe operations of all vehicles utilized.

- Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Occasional after-hours and weekend work as needed, Schedule may vary based on operational needs
- Minimum Hourly Rate*: $27.40/Hour - Compensation is commensurate with qualifications.

- High School Diploma or general education degree.
- Five (5) years of related experience and/or equivalent training.
- Must possess a valid and current Hawaii Driver’s License.
- Must have a clean driver’s abstract.
- Licensed mechanic preferred.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
