What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Teacher, Summer School - PUEO position at Punahou?
In its 21st year, the PUEO Program embodies the essence of Punahou’s commitment to being a private school serving a larger public purpose through meaningful partnerships with other schools and educators. PUEO proudly employs summer faculty from public and private schools across Hawai‘i. Students are nominated for the Clarence T.C. Ching PUEO multi-year scholarship by Hawai‘i Department of Education administrators and counselors. PUEO scholars (grades 4-12) join the program as a cohort and return each summer for five weeks of summer learning at Punahou, earning HIDOE credit toward the goal of college readiness.
The Assistant Teacher (AT Kumu) collaborates with the lead teacher (Kumu) to create a teaching team that allows for more flexibility within the classroom, and the ability to break away in smaller groups with more opportunities for student-teacher interaction. The Assistant Teacher (AT Kumu) works in partnership with the lead Kumu to develop the curriculum and instructional practices which will best support the growth and development of each scholar. Scholars remain together in their cohort for nine years. A central reason for scholars to return each summer is the relationships they establish in their cohort; the friendships and community the scholars create together is key to their achievement each summer. Our AT Kumu are the mentors and role models to our scholars, and they are extremely positive influences to the cohort.
