What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic and Student Success Advisor position at Purdue University?
The College of Nursing (CON) at Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is seeking an Academic and Student Success Advisor for our undergraduate programs, which includes the traditional and the accelerated track. The primary purpose of the Academic and Student Success Advisor is to provide individual, appreciative, and transformational advising to students on matters such as selection of major, course selection and sequencing, and academic performance.
This position does have the opportunity for a flexible work schedule during the summer, but does require a strong on-campus presence.
Schedule:
- 8:00am - 4:30pm with occasional evening or Saturday hours. We will flex your work schedule to accommodate.
- Monitor the academic progress of all assigned advisees and intervene where necessary to ensure that students are receiving accurate, consistent and timely information regarding registration dates and procedures, interpretation of University policies and graduation requirements.
- Advise students on alternatives to dropping classes and withdrawing from the university. If possible, conduct exit interviews for total withdrawals including providing signature authority on drops and full withdrawals. Approve appropriate educational transactions as necessary. (e.g. schedule, drop/adds, withdrawals, change of major, etc.).
- Maintain close relationships with departments to ensure information provided to advisees on department policies, curriculum changes and upcoming events and activities is current and up-to-date. Meet with departments to update the flow charts and degree- plans.

- Assist the departments with orientation departmental presentations and sessions for students. Assist students with registration.
- Participate in New Student Orientation, Open Houses, Preview PNW, College Fairs, and related University events.

- Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field required (e.g., social work, counseling, education)
- Three years of professional work experience within a public higher education setting in an academic advising and/or retention-related position preferred
- Ability to learn, understand, and relay the full range of student services available; including enrollment services, academic policies and procedures of Purdue University Northwest
- Ability to initiate and maintain retention-related outreach projects, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and possess excellent organizational and time management skills
- Knowledge of student databases such as Banner, information systems and communication technologies highly desired
- Strong interpersonal and human relations skills essential, as well as excellent verbal and written communication
- Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential
- Ability to interpret and communicate university policies and procedures and associated federal and state regulations
- Ability to adapt well to changes and willingness to learn new things
- Ability to initiate and maintain professional relationships with diverse groups and demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population
- Ability to professionally represent Purdue University Northwest
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as assigned
